Background of the Study
The need for effective network security measures has become more pronounced as cyber-attacks have evolved in sophistication. Institutions of higher learning, including Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State, are attractive targets for hackers due to the valuable intellectual property, research data, and personal information stored on their networks. Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) play a pivotal role in protecting university networks from these external and internal threats by actively detecting and preventing malicious activity in real-time. An IPS not only identifies potential security breaches but also takes corrective actions to prevent damage, including blocking harmful traffic or quarantining infected devices (Yusuf et al., 2024).
With universities being hubs of research, sensitive data, and vast amounts of online learning content, securing the network from intrusions is vital to ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information. This study will explore how an IPS can be implemented and optimized to enhance the security of Federal University, Kashere’s network infrastructure, protecting the university’s resources from cyber threats while maintaining seamless network operations.

Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Kashere is at risk of cyber-attacks that could compromise its network security, leading to data breaches or operational disruptions. The absence of a proactive, real-time intrusion prevention mechanism puts the university's data and resources in jeopardy, underscoring the need for a robust IPS to safeguard the network.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the current network security measures in place at Federal University, Kashere.

  2. To design and implement an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) for the university’s network.

  3. To assess the effectiveness of the IPS in preventing network intrusions and improving overall network security.

Research Questions

  1. What are the current network security measures used at Federal University, Kashere?

  2. How does an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) improve network security and prevent intrusions?

  3. What is the impact of IPS on the university’s network performance and security?

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the implementation and evaluation of an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) at Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State. The scope is limited to the university's network security infrastructure and does not address other aspects of cybersecurity such as physical security or personnel training.

Definitions of Terms

  • Intrusion Prevention System (IPS): A security technology designed to detect and prevent network intrusions or malicious activities.

  • Cyber-attack: A deliberate attempt to breach the security of a computer system or network.

  • Network Security: The protection of a network from unauthorized access, misuse, or attacks.

  • Data Breach: Unauthorized access to confidential or sensitive data.
