Background of the Study
The rapid growth of the internet and digital technologies has brought numerous benefits to academic institutions, but it has also exposed them to various network security threats. Universities like Federal University, Gusau, Zamfara State, are particularly vulnerable to cyber-attacks due to the large number of devices, diverse user base, and valuable data they manage. Network security threats, including malware, ransomware, phishing attacks, and unauthorized access, can result in data breaches, financial losses, and damage to the university's reputation (Ali et al., 2023).
The dynamic nature of modern cyber threats requires that universities implement advanced security measures to protect their networks and sensitive information. Identifying and analyzing network security threats is the first step in developing a comprehensive security framework that can mitigate risks and ensure the continued confidentiality, integrity, and availability of institutional data.
This study will investigate the current network security threats faced by Federal University, Gusau, Zamfara State, and assess the effectiveness of existing security measures in safeguarding the university’s digital infrastructure.
Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Gusau, is currently exposed to several security vulnerabilities that could compromise its network and data. These threats range from internal user errors to sophisticated external attacks. However, the university lacks a comprehensive and proactive security strategy to address these threats, leading to potential risks of data breaches and network disruption.
Objectives of the Study
To identify the network security threats currently faced by Federal University, Gusau.
To assess the effectiveness of the university’s existing security measures in addressing identified threats.
To recommend enhanced security protocols to mitigate potential risks and improve network security.
Research Questions
What are the primary network security threats affecting Federal University, Gusau?
How effective are the existing network security measures in mitigating these threats?
What additional security protocols should be implemented to improve the university’s network security?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on analyzing network security threats within the infrastructure of Federal University, Gusau, Zamfara State. It will examine the internal and external security risks but will not address physical security aspects or non-network related security concerns.
