Background of the Study
Network performance metrics are crucial in assessing the efficiency, reliability, and overall quality of a campus network. At Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, evaluating network performance is essential to understand the factors influencing network speed, reliability, and the user experience (Danjuma et al., 2024). By monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) such as bandwidth usage, latency, packet loss, and throughput, network administrators can identify issues and optimize the network to meet the demands of students, faculty, and staff.
Network performance evaluation provides valuable insights into the strengths and weaknesses of the existing infrastructure, enabling informed decisions about network upgrades or maintenance. Key performance metrics such as bandwidth, latency, packet loss, and jitter play a significant role in determining the quality of service (QoS) and the effectiveness of network protocols (Hassan & Bakare, 2023). This study aims to evaluate the network performance at Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, and provide recommendations to optimize the network for better user experience and service delivery.
Effective monitoring and evaluation can lead to improvements in network management practices, ensuring that the university’s network can support an increasing number of users and devices.
Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, faces challenges with its network performance, including slow speeds, high latency, and occasional packet loss. The lack of a comprehensive evaluation of network performance metrics has made it difficult to identify the root causes of these issues and implement effective solutions. Poor network performance negatively affects the user experience, impacting academic and administrative operations.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the network performance metrics of Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, including bandwidth usage, latency, packet loss, and throughput.
To identify the key factors affecting the university’s network performance and their impact on the user experience.
To propose recommendations for optimizing network performance and improving service delivery.
Research Questions
What are the key performance metrics for evaluating the network at Federal University, Birnin Kebbi?
How does network performance affect the overall user experience at the university?
What strategies can be implemented to optimize network performance and address existing issues?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on evaluating the network performance metrics at Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. The study will examine bandwidth usage, latency, packet loss, and throughput, and assess their impact on the user experience. Limitations may include access to real-time performance data, the complexity of measuring network performance in a dynamic environment, and challenges in implementing optimization strategies without significant infrastructure changes.
Definitions of Terms
Network Performance Metrics: Quantitative measures used to evaluate the efficiency and reliability of a network, including bandwidth, latency, and packet loss.
Bandwidth Usage: The amount of data transmitted over the network during a given time period.
Latency: The time delay experienced by data as it travels from the source to the destination in a network.
Throughput: The rate at which data is successfully transmitted over the network, typically measured in bits per second (bps).
