Background of the Study
Network virtualization is the process of creating a virtual version of a network by abstracting its physical components into virtual entities that can be managed and allocated more efficiently. This technology allows for improved network scalability, flexibility, and management, which is critical in environments with rapidly changing network demands such as universities. Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State, has experienced increased demand for network services, which has led to challenges in managing and scaling the physical network infrastructure (Ibrahim et al., 2023).
Network virtualization offers several benefits, including easier management of network resources, improved network performance, and reduced operational costs by enabling the dynamic allocation of network resources based on demand (Musa & Abdul, 2024). This study will investigate the impact of network virtualization on the performance and efficiency of the campus network at Federal University, Lokoja. The study will explore how network virtualization can improve resource utilization, reduce network downtime, and provide a more flexible network infrastructure to accommodate the university’s growing digital needs.
By examining the potential advantages and challenges of implementing network virtualization, the study aims to provide recommendations for its integration into the university’s network.
Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Lokoja, faces challenges in managing and scaling its physical network infrastructure to meet the growing demand for digital services. The lack of a virtualized network infrastructure limits the university’s ability to allocate resources dynamically and efficiently, leading to performance degradation, slow network speeds, and difficulty in scaling the network to meet future demands. The absence of network virtualization may hinder the university’s ability to provide a reliable and efficient network for its students, faculty, and staff.
Objectives of the Study
To investigate the impact of network virtualization on the performance of the network at Federal University, Lokoja.
To assess the benefits and challenges of implementing network virtualization at the university.
To provide recommendations for integrating network virtualization into the university’s network infrastructure.
Research Questions
What impact does network virtualization have on the performance and scalability of the network at Federal University, Lokoja?
What are the potential benefits and challenges of implementing network virtualization at the university?
How can network virtualization be effectively integrated into the university’s existing network infrastructure?
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on investigating the impact of network virtualization on the network performance at Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State. The study will examine the benefits and challenges of implementing virtualization and propose strategies for its successful integration. Limitations may include the complexity of evaluating network virtualization in real-world scenarios, the availability of infrastructure to support virtualization, and resistance to adopting new network technologies.
Definitions of Terms
