Background of the Study
Network access control is a crucial component of network security, especially in institutions with large and diverse user bases like Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State. Network access control mechanisms are designed to ensure that only authorized users and devices can access network resources, preventing unauthorized access and potential security breaches (Jibril et al., 2023).
In universities, access control mechanisms protect sensitive data, academic resources, and administrative systems from cyberattacks, unauthorized users, and data theft. The effectiveness of these mechanisms depends on their ability to enforce policies such as user authentication, device authentication, and access permissions (Aminu & Suleiman, 2024). Despite the importance of access control, many universities still face challenges in implementing and evaluating these mechanisms effectively. This study aims to evaluate the existing network access control mechanisms at Federal University, Lafia, and determine their effectiveness in securing the university’s network.
Through a comprehensive evaluation, the study will explore the strengths and weaknesses of the university’s current access control system and suggest improvements where necessary.

Statement of the Problem
The current network access control mechanisms at Federal University, Lafia, may not be sufficient to secure the network against unauthorized access and potential breaches. The absence of comprehensive evaluations has led to the continued use of outdated or ineffective access control measures, leaving the university vulnerable to cyber threats. Without an in-depth understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of these mechanisms, the university is at risk of compromising its network security.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of the network access control mechanisms at Federal University, Lafia.

  2. To identify weaknesses or gaps in the current access control system.

  3. To propose recommendations for improving network access control and enhancing the overall security of the university’s network.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are the current network access control mechanisms in securing Federal University, Lafia’s network?

  2. What weaknesses or gaps exist in the current access control system at the university?

  3. What improvements can be made to the network access control mechanisms to strengthen network security at Federal University, Lafia?

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on evaluating the network access control mechanisms in place at Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State. The study will assess the effectiveness of the current system in preventing unauthorized access and protecting network resources. Limitations may include the difficulty of obtaining sensitive data related to access control, access to restricted areas of the network, and the potential challenges of evaluating all aspects of access control.

Definitions of Terms

  • Network Access Control (NAC): A system that manages and restricts access to a network based on predefined security policies and user authentication.

  • Authentication: The process of verifying the identity of a user or device attempting to access the network.

  • Access Control Policies: The rules that define who can access specific network resources and under what conditions.

  • Network Security: The practice of protecting the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of network resources from unauthorized access, misuse, or attack.
