Background of the Study
University campuses rely on a variety of networking technologies to support the academic, research, and administrative needs of staff and students. The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) in Borno State, like many other Nigerian universities, experiences significant network traffic due to the growing number of students, faculty, and online activities. The increasing demand for internet access for e-learning, administrative services, and personal use has led to congestion, slow internet speeds, and service disruptions (Ajayi et al., 2023).
Understanding network traffic patterns is critical in optimizing network performance and enhancing the quality of service provided to users (Ibrahim & Lawal, 2024). Analyzing traffic flow can reveal underlying issues, such as peak usage times, bandwidth consumption by specific applications, and the distribution of network load. Identifying these patterns allows for efficient network planning and resource allocation, ensuring that the network infrastructure is capable of handling future growth and providing a satisfactory experience for users (Akinyele et al., 2023).
In UNIMAID, as with many institutions in Nigeria, inadequate monitoring and analysis of network traffic contribute to inefficient use of resources, leading to periods of slow or interrupted connectivity. Additionally, without a detailed analysis of traffic patterns, the university cannot make informed decisions about how to scale its network or which areas need improvement (Abdullahi et al., 2025). Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze the network traffic patterns at UNIMAID, identify potential issues, and propose strategies for better management and optimization of the campus network.

Statement of the Problem
The University of Maiduguri is experiencing network inefficiencies due to congestion and inadequate monitoring of network traffic patterns. These inefficiencies result in suboptimal performance, including slow internet speeds, frequent connectivity interruptions, and delays in accessing online resources. As the university continues to grow and adopt more online-based services, these issues are likely to worsen. There is a lack of comprehensive data on the traffic patterns across different departments, making it difficult to pinpoint areas with the highest demand and potential network bottlenecks (Mohammed et al., 2024). Without effective traffic analysis, UNIMAID may struggle to optimize its network infrastructure, leading to continued performance issues that could hinder both academic and administrative operations.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the network traffic patterns at the University of Maiduguri to identify usage trends, peak times, and bandwidth bottlenecks.

  2. To evaluate the impact of current network traffic on the quality of service and user satisfaction at UNIMAID.

  3. To propose strategies for improving network performance based on traffic analysis, including resource allocation and infrastructure upgrades.

Research Questions

  1. What are the key network traffic patterns at the University of Maiduguri in terms of usage, peak times, and bandwidth consumption?

  2. How do current network traffic patterns affect the performance and user experience of the university’s network?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to optimize network performance and reduce congestion based on the identified traffic patterns?

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the analysis of network traffic patterns within the main campus of the University of Maiduguri, Borno State. The research will cover all major academic, administrative, and student network traffic, but it will exclude satellite campuses or other external facilities. The analysis will be limited to monitoring and observing data traffic flow over a designated period, and may be constrained by technical issues such as access to network data or limitations in monitoring tools.

Definitions of Terms

  • Network Traffic Patterns: The flow of data within a network, including the amount, type, and direction of data transmitted over time.

  • Bandwidth Bottleneck: A point in the network where traffic congestion reduces the available bandwidth, leading to slower network performance.

  • Quality of Service (QoS): The overall performance of a network, often measured in terms of speed, latency, and reliability of the service provided to users.

  • Traffic Analysis: The process of monitoring and analyzing the flow of data within a network to understand usage trends, identify issues, and optimize performance.
