Background of the Study
Adolescent reproductive health is a critical public health issue, as early sexual activity and pregnancy can have profound physical, psychological, and social consequences. Nurses, as trusted healthcare providers, play an important role in adolescent reproductive health programs by offering education, counseling, and access to contraceptive methods (United Nations Population Fund [UNFPA], 2024).
At University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, nurses have been involved in various adolescent reproductive health programs aimed at reducing adolescent pregnancy rates, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and improving overall sexual health awareness. However, the effectiveness of these programs and the specific impact of nurses' involvement have not been systematically evaluated. This study seeks to assess the effect of nurses' participation in adolescent reproductive health programs at the institution.
Statement of the Problem
Adolescent reproductive health remains a significant concern in Nigeria, with many young people lacking adequate knowledge of sexual health, contraception, and disease prevention. Nurses play a crucial role in addressing these gaps through their involvement in educational programs. However, the specific impact of nurses' contributions to adolescent reproductive health programs at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital is not well documented.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the effect of nurses’ involvement in adolescent reproductive health programs at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
2. To identify key outcomes associated with nurse-led education in adolescent sexual health.
3. To recommend strategies for enhancing nurses’ involvement in improving adolescent reproductive health outcomes.
Research Questions
1. How does nurses' involvement in adolescent reproductive health programs affect sexual health outcomes at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital?
2. What are the key benefits of nurse-led education in adolescent sexual health?
3. How can nurses' involvement in adolescent reproductive health programs be strengthened to improve outcomes?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses’ involvement in adolescent reproductive health programs improves sexual health outcomes among adolescents.
2. Nurse-led education significantly enhances adolescents' knowledge of contraception and disease prevention.
3. Targeted strategies can strengthen nurses' roles in adolescent reproductive health programs.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on adolescents attending reproductive health programs where nurses are actively involved at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. Limitations include potential bias in self-reported data and the inability to assess long-term impacts on adolescents' reproductive health behaviors.
