Background of the Study
Disasters, including natural and human-made events, pose significant challenges to healthcare systems. Nurses’ disaster response skills are critical for managing emergencies effectively and minimizing casualties. Simulation-based training has emerged as a valuable method for enhancing these skills by providing realistic scenarios that prepare nurses for actual disasters (International Journal of Disaster Nursing [IJDN], 2024).
At State Specialist Hospital, Kano, simulation-based training programs have been introduced to improve disaster preparedness. These programs allow nurses to practice and refine their response techniques, including triage, communication, and coordination, in controlled environments. However, the impact of such training on disaster response skills has not been comprehensively evaluated (Bello & Hassan, 2023).
This study assesses the effectiveness of simulation-based training in enhancing nurses’ disaster response skills, offering evidence for its integration into broader disaster preparedness initiatives.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing frequency of disasters, many nurses lack the necessary training to respond effectively, leading to suboptimal patient outcomes and heightened risks for healthcare workers. Simulation-based training programs aim to address this gap by providing hands-on experience in disaster scenarios.
At State Specialist Hospital, Kano, the effectiveness of these programs in improving disaster response skills remains underexplored. Understanding the impact of simulation-based training is crucial for informing training policies and improving disaster preparedness.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of simulation-based training on nurses’ disaster response skills at State Specialist Hospital, Kano.
2. To identify specific areas of improvement in nurses’ disaster preparedness through simulation-based training.
3. To recommend strategies for integrating simulation-based training into routine nurse education and practice.
Research Questions
1. How does simulation-based training impact nurses’ disaster response skills at State Specialist Hospital, Kano?
2. What specific areas of disaster preparedness are improved through simulation-based training?
3. How can simulation-based training be effectively integrated into routine nurse education?
Research Hypotheses
1. Simulation-based training significantly enhances nurses’ disaster response skills.
2. Specific areas such as triage, communication, and teamwork show marked improvement through simulation-based training.
3. Integration of simulation-based training into routine education enhances overall disaster preparedness.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on nurses at State Specialist Hospital, Kano, who have undergone simulation-based training. It excludes other healthcare professionals and alternative training methods. Limitations include the potential variability in training quality and the exclusion of long-term impacts of training.
