Background of the Study

Maternal mortality remains a pressing global health issue, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where the majority of maternal deaths occur due to preventable or treatable complications. Nurse-led interventions, including prenatal education, risk assessment, and timely referrals, have been identified as effective strategies for reducing maternal mortality rates (International Journal of Nursing Studies [IJNS], 2023).

Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, serves as a referral center for high-risk pregnancies in Northern Nigeria. Nurses play a crucial role in implementing interventions that target the prevention, identification, and management of obstetric complications. However, the effectiveness of these interventions in reducing maternal mortality remains underexplored (Hassan & Ibrahim, 2024). This study evaluates the impact of nurse-led interventions on maternal mortality reduction at the hospital, providing evidence for policy and practice improvements.

Statement of the Problem

Maternal mortality remains alarmingly high in Nigeria, with an estimated 512 deaths per 100,000 live births (WHO, 2024). At Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, nurse-led interventions are integral to addressing this issue. However, systemic challenges, including limited resources, insufficient training, and delayed access to care, hinder the full potential of these interventions.

There is limited empirical evidence on the specific impact of nurse-led interventions on maternal mortality reduction at the hospital. This study seeks to address this gap by evaluating the effectiveness of these interventions and identifying areas for enhancement.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the types of nurse-led interventions implemented to reduce maternal mortality at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria.

2. To evaluate the impact of these interventions on maternal mortality rates.

3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in implementing maternal mortality reduction strategies.

Research Questions

1. What nurse-led interventions are implemented to reduce maternal mortality at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria?

2. How do these interventions impact maternal mortality rates?

3. What challenges do nurses face in implementing maternal mortality reduction strategies?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurse-led interventions significantly reduce maternal mortality rates.

2. The implementation of effective nurse-led strategies is associated with improved maternal health outcomes.

3. Challenges such as limited resources and training gaps hinder the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on nurse-led interventions targeting maternal mortality reduction at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria. It excludes other healthcare providers and non-maternal health interventions. Limitations include potential bias in self-reported data and the exclusion of long-term outcomes due to the study’s cross-sectional design.

Definitions of Terms

• Nurse-Led Interventions: Healthcare strategies primarily designed and implemented by nurses to address specific health outcomes.

• Maternal Mortality: Deaths occurring during pregnancy, childbirth, or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy due to pregnancy-related complications.

• Effectiveness: The degree to which nurse-led interventions achieve the desired reduction in maternal mortality.
