Background of study
Some individuals see physical libraries as antiquated relics of a bygone era, given today's quick anywhere-anytime access to Google, Bing, and Wolfram Alpha, where searching for information takes a few micro seconds via an internet connected device. Looking at the current state of digital library portals, it appears that the internet is virtually non-existent in the academic resource finding environment (Amali, 2016). Online library catalogues, electronic journals, and (sometimes) e-books, which are mostly digitally transformed print works that have historically been the focus of library acquisition programs, are what we find. Databases have also been around for a long time. Publishers, book companies, and subscription agencies often offer content through well-established service routes (Azu, 2015). The proliferation of a wide range of content types and formats has resulted from the digitization of publishing and the introduction of the World Wide Web, including, but not limited to, digitized collections, faculty and research group websites, conference web servers, preprint/e-print servers, and, increasingly, institutional repositories and archives, as well as a wide range of learning objects and courses.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of computerization and automation of library resources, libraries in Nigeria still face issues. Some of these challenges, according to Nok (2006), include unreliable WAN/LAN connections that are frequently exposed to the effects of fire, storms, and vandalism, a shortage of computer-literate staff in libraries, a poor state of power generation, a poor maintenance and update culture, and poor library funding. Hardware failure, software issues, inconsistent and epileptic power supply, insufficient budget, a lack of staff training, and deliberate obsolescence of commercial software are among the hurdles confronting library automation, according to Adegbore (2010). According to Gbadamosi (2012), library automation has obstacles such as band with subscription, daily and routine maintenance of computer set, and lack of consistent financing for library services.
This research looked at how improvements in search engine technology have impacted the NOUN library and how their adoption has helped overcome the difficulties of automation and physical resource management. Also, to learn how the NOUN library was able to implement the usage of a search engine in its library despite budgetary constraints, such as the fear of losing employees and worries about the high cost of search engine adoption.
The study will answer the following research questions:
1.4 Objectives of the Study:
The broad objective of the study is to examine the advances and impact of search engine technology on use of libraries. The specific objectives are:
1.5 Significance of the Study.
The research will be significant in several ways:
First and foremost, it will benefit NOUN library and its management in that it will reveal the degree of effectiveness of search engine technology in meeting users' information needs and, as a result, encourage them to work out modalities to improve search engine technology's functionality if the need arises.
It will also serve to disclose the extent to which search engine technology is being implemented for NOUN library's services by highlighting the previous and current condition of search engine technology adoption in the library. The library's search engine will be improved, resulting in enhanced library services to help NOUN Open and Distance Learning Programs achieve their goals.
It will also be beneficial to academics and academic institution administration in their research. It will also be a significant contribution to knowledge in the domain of search engine usage for library services.
1.6 Scope of Study.
The study examined the adoption of search engine technology for library services in the National Open University of Nigeria Headquarter Library Lagos. NOUN has sixteen (16) libraries located in the six geopolitical zones of the country. The Libraries are located in the following zones: Kaduna , Kano Study Centre (North West); Abuja, Lokoja, Makudi Study Centre (North- Central); Enugu, Akwa Study Centre (South-East); Calabar, Benin,
Asaba Study Centre (South- South); Bauchi, Jos, Maiduguri, Dutse, Study Centre (North East) Apapa, Lagos main Library, (South-West) For the purpose of this study, the researcher will focus on the Lagos Main Library, and the reasons is due to the fact that search engine administration takes place in NOUN Headquarter Main Library.
1.7 ORGANIZATION OF THE STUDY
The study is divided into five (5) chapters and organized as follows:
Chapter one from the introduction part, this is where the main theme of the research is given. It comprises of the statement of the problem, objectives of the study, research questions and hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and delimitation of the study and organization of the study.
Chapter two is the literature review of the comparison of the management practices of public and private secondary schools in Oru West Local Government Area of Imo State. Chapter three forms the research methodology which includes sources of data, method of data analysis and model specification.
Chapter four is the data analysis while chapter five includes the summary, conclusion and recommendations.
