Background of the Study

In Nigeria, traditional medicine plays a vital role in the healthcare system, with a large proportion of the population relying on it for the treatment of common ailments (Adams et al., 2024). However, the integration of traditional medicine into the formal healthcare system remains a challenge due to a variety of factors, including cultural, regulatory, and educational barriers. While primary healthcare services aim to provide comprehensive care that meets the needs of the population, incorporating traditional medicine into these services requires overcoming significant challenges.

State Specialist Hospital, Kano, is one of the key healthcare providers in the region and serves as an important reference point for healthcare delivery. Despite the hospital's commitment to providing quality care, the integration of traditional medicine into its primary healthcare services remains a topic of discussion. Nurses, as integral members of the healthcare team, are directly involved in patient care and could play a crucial role in bridging the gap between traditional and conventional medicine. However, the challenges involved in this integration process may hinder their ability to provide holistic care (Salihu & Ali, 2023).

This study aims to appraise the challenges faced by healthcare providers, particularly nurses, in integrating traditional medicine into primary healthcare services at State Specialist Hospital, Kano.

Statement of the Problem

Integrating traditional medicine into primary healthcare services presents various challenges, including resistance from healthcare professionals, lack of standardization, and inadequate training. Nurses, who are at the frontline of patient care, may face difficulties in promoting or incorporating traditional medicine into their practice due to a lack of understanding or official support from the hospital. This study will assess these challenges to understand how they affect the integration of traditional medicine into primary healthcare services at State Specialist Hospital, Kano.
