Background of the Study
Policy formulation in healthcare involves the development of rules, regulations, and strategies that guide the delivery of healthcare services. Nurses, as frontline healthcare providers, possess valuable insights into the needs of patients and the functioning of healthcare systems. However, their involvement in policy formulation, particularly in hospital settings, is often limited despite their critical role in patient care and service delivery (Ogundipe et al., 2024).
At Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria, nurses play an essential role in the day-to-day management of patient care, yet their contribution to healthcare policy formulation has not been fully explored. Effective policy formulation that takes into account the perspectives of nurses can lead to better healthcare outcomes, as nurses are intimately familiar with the challenges faced by patients and healthcare systems. This study will evaluate the extent of nurses' involvement in policy formulation at ABUTH, Zaria, and assess the potential benefits of increasing their participation in the policymaking process.
Statement of the Problem
Although nurses are essential to the delivery of healthcare services, their involvement in healthcare policy formulation is often marginal. At ABUTH, Zaria, the extent to which nurses contribute to the development of hospital policies is unclear. This study seeks to evaluate nurses' involvement in policy formulation and examine the potential benefits of increased nurse participation in the process.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of nurses' involvement in policy formulation at ABUTH, Zaria.
2. To evaluate the impact of nurses’ involvement on the quality and effectiveness of healthcare policies.
3. To identify barriers to nurses’ participation in policy formulation and suggest strategies for enhancing their involvement.
Research Questions
1. To what extent are nurses involved in policy formulation at ABUTH, Zaria?
2. How does nurses' involvement in policy formulation impact the quality of healthcare policies?
3. What barriers limit nurses' participation in policy formulation, and how can these barriers be overcome?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses at ABUTH, Zaria, are minimally involved in healthcare policy formulation.
2. Increased nurses' involvement in policy formulation leads to more effective and practical healthcare policies.
3. Barriers such as lack of training, organizational structure, and insufficient support limit nurses' involvement in policy formulation.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses' involvement in healthcare policy formulation at ABUTH, Zaria. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews with nurses and policymakers. Limitations may include the challenges in assessing the direct impact of nurses’ involvement on policy outcomes.
