Background of the Study
Teenage pregnancy remains a significant public health issue in Nigeria, particularly in the northern states like Bauchi. Teenage pregnancy often leads to numerous health complications for both the mother and the child, including high maternal and infant mortality rates, complications during childbirth, and socioeconomic challenges for young mothers (Uzochukwu et al., 2024). Nurses, as primary healthcare providers, are in a unique position to educate young people on reproductive health and prevent unintended pregnancies.
In Bauchi State, a predominantly conservative region, teenage pregnancy is influenced by cultural practices, early marriage, and limited access to reproductive health education. While there are several initiatives aimed at addressing teenage pregnancy, the role of nurses in this area remains underexplored. Nurses can play an integral role in preventing teenage pregnancies through education, counseling, and promoting the use of contraceptives. However, cultural stigmas, inadequate training, and a lack of community awareness may hinder their efforts (Akinyemi et al., 2023).
This study aims to investigate the role of nurses in preventing teenage pregnancies in Bauchi State and evaluate the challenges they face in promoting reproductive health education to adolescents.
Statement of the Problem
Teenage pregnancies continue to be prevalent in Bauchi State, despite the availability of reproductive health services. The role of nurses in preventing teenage pregnancies has not been adequately explored. Nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and practices are crucial in delivering effective education and prevention strategies. This study will examine the barriers nurses face in addressing teenage pregnancy in Bauchi State and their role in preventing it.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the knowledge and attitudes of nurses towards teenage pregnancy prevention in Bauchi State.
2. To evaluate the role of nurses in delivering reproductive health education to teenagers.
3. To identify the barriers that prevent nurses from effectively addressing teenage pregnancy in Bauchi State.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of knowledge and attitudes of nurses towards teenage pregnancy prevention in Bauchi State?
2. What role do nurses play in providing reproductive health education to adolescents?
3. What barriers hinder nurses from preventing teenage pregnancies in Bauchi State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses in Bauchi State have insufficient knowledge and negative attitudes towards teenage pregnancy prevention.
2. Nurses' involvement in reproductive health education positively influences the prevention of teenage pregnancies.
3. Cultural and societal barriers significantly hinder nurses' efforts in preventing teenage pregnancies in Bauchi State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on nurses in Bauchi State and their role in preventing teenage pregnancies. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews. Limitations include cultural sensitivities surrounding teenage pregnancy, which may hinder open discussion, and the diversity of training among nurses.
