Background of the Study

Mental health in the workplace has become a critical issue, particularly in high-stress professions such as nursing. Nurses are frequently exposed to emotionally demanding situations, long working hours, and high patient loads, all of which can contribute to stress, burnout, and mental health challenges (International Council of Nurses [ICN], 2024). Workplace mental health policies play a crucial role in supporting nurses' well-being, improving job satisfaction, and enhancing overall job performance.

At Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Makurdi, nurses face immense work-related stress due to resource constraints, staff shortages, and exposure to traumatic incidents. The presence or absence of effective workplace mental health policies can significantly impact their ability to perform their duties effectively. Research has shown that institutions with strong mental health support systems report lower nurse burnout rates, improved job efficiency, and higher patient satisfaction (Adebayo et al., 2023). However, the extent to which workplace mental health policies influence job performance among nurses at FMC, Makurdi, remains unclear.

Given the increasing recognition of mental health as a key factor in workforce productivity, this study seeks to examine the effectiveness of existing workplace mental health policies at FMC, Makurdi, and their impact on nurses’ job performance. The findings will inform recommendations for improving mental health support systems in healthcare settings.

Statement of the Problem

The nursing profession is inherently stressful, with high emotional and physical demands that can affect mental well-being. At FMC, Makurdi, nurses experience workplace challenges such as extended shifts, psychological distress, and inadequate mental health support. In healthcare institutions where workplace mental health policies are weak or non-existent, nurses may experience higher levels of burnout, absenteeism, and reduced job performance. However, there is limited research on the specific impact of workplace mental health policies on nurses' job performance at FMC, Makurdi. This study aims to fill this gap by assessing how these policies influence nurses' mental well-being and job effectiveness.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the impact of workplace mental health policies on nurses' job performance at FMC, Makurdi.

2. To identify challenges affecting the implementation of mental health policies for nurses.

3. To recommend strategies for improving workplace mental health policies to enhance nurse performance.

Research Questions

1. How do workplace mental health policies affect nurses' job performance at FMC, Makurdi?

2. What challenges hinder the effective implementation of mental health policies for nurses?

3. What strategies can be adopted to improve workplace mental health policies in hospitals?

Research Hypotheses

1. Workplace mental health policies have a significant impact on nurses' job performance.

2. The absence of effective mental health policies leads to increased stress and burnout among nurses.

3. Strengthening mental health policies in the workplace will improve nurses' performance and job satisfaction.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses at FMC, Makurdi, analyzing the impact of workplace mental health policies on their job performance. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and hospital policy reviews. Limitations may include reluctance from management to disclose policy weaknesses and nurses' hesitation to discuss personal mental health challenges.

Definitions of Terms

• Workplace mental health policies: Organizational strategies and regulations aimed at promoting employees' psychological well-being.

• Job performance: The efficiency and effectiveness with which an employee performs assigned tasks.

• Burnout: A state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress.
