Background of the Study

Conflict-induced displacement remains a significant human rights challenge in many parts of Nigeria, especially in regions affected by insurgency and inter-communal violence. The northeast region of Nigeria, including Yobe State, has been severely impacted by the Boko Haram insurgency, leading to widespread displacement of communities. This displacement has not only resulted in the loss of livelihoods, homes, and security but has also disrupted access to essential services, particularly education.

In Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, the impact of conflict-induced displacement on the right to education is profound. Displaced children, often living in overcrowded internally displaced persons (IDP) camps or with host families, face significant barriers to accessing quality education. Many schools have been damaged, and the displacement of families has further strained already limited educational resources. This study aims to assess how conflict-induced displacement has affected access to education in Damaturu, Yobe State, and to identify the specific challenges faced by displaced children in their right to education.

Statement of the Problem

The conflict in northeastern Nigeria has displaced thousands of people, including children, whose access to education has been severely affected. In Damaturu, Yobe State, the disruption caused by the insurgency has led to the closure or destruction of many schools, making it difficult for displaced children to continue their education. Even in IDP camps, education facilities are often inadequate, and the lack of teachers, learning materials, and basic infrastructure compounds the challenges. This study seeks to understand the extent to which conflict-induced displacement has violated the right to education for children in Damaturu and to examine the barriers that prevent displaced children from accessing education.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of conflict-induced displacement on access to education in Damaturu, Yobe State.

  2. To identify the specific challenges faced by displaced children in accessing education.

  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of government and humanitarian interventions in ensuring the right to education for displaced children in Damaturu.

Research Questions

  1. How has conflict-induced displacement in Damaturu affected access to education for children?

  2. What are the specific challenges faced by displaced children in accessing education in Damaturu?

  3. How effective have government and humanitarian interventions been in ensuring the right to education for displaced children in Damaturu?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Conflict-induced displacement in Damaturu significantly reduces access to education for children.

  2. Displaced children in Damaturu face significant challenges in accessing education, including inadequate school facilities and lack of resources.

  3. Government and humanitarian interventions have not been fully effective in ensuring the right to education for displaced children in Damaturu.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the effects of conflict-induced displacement on the right to education in Damaturu, Yobe State, and will examine the barriers faced by displaced children. It will also assess the role of government and humanitarian organizations in addressing these challenges. Limitations include difficulties in accessing displaced populations and potential bias in self-reported data.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Conflict-Induced Displacement: The forced displacement of individuals or communities due to armed conflict or violence, resulting in their relocation to IDP camps or host communities.

  2. Right to Education: The right of every individual to access quality education, as enshrined in international human rights law.

  3. Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs): Individuals or groups who have been displaced within their own country due to conflict, violence, or other reasons, and are often living in camps or with host families.
