Background of the Study
Economic inclusion refers to ensuring that all individuals, particularly those from disadvantaged or marginalized groups, have access to the economic opportunities they need to improve their standard of living. In Nigeria, microfinance institutions have been identified as key players in fostering economic inclusion by providing small loans and financial services to low-income individuals and small businesses. Local governments are increasingly involved in supporting microfinance initiatives aimed at reducing poverty and promoting economic development.
Bauchi Central LGA, located in Bauchi State, has a large population of small-scale farmers, traders, and artisans who often lack access to traditional banking services. Microfinance programs introduced by the local government have played a vital role in promoting financial inclusion by providing affordable loans and financial literacy training. This study seeks to evaluate the role of local government in promoting economic inclusion through microfinance in Bauchi Central LGA.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the introduction of microfinance programs in Bauchi Central, challenges such as limited access to capital, high-interest rates, and low financial literacy continue to hinder the effective implementation of these programs. The local government has been involved in facilitating these programs, but there is limited understanding of how these initiatives are impacting economic inclusion in the region. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of these microfinance programs and identify the barriers to their success.
