Background of the Study

Child mortality remains a major health issue in Nigeria, with the country recording some of the highest child mortality rates globally. In regions like Lafia West Local Government Area (LGA) in Nasarawa State, child mortality is exacerbated by factors such as poverty, poor healthcare infrastructure, inadequate nutrition, and limited access to clean water and sanitation. Local governments are at the forefront of public health delivery, and they play a critical role in developing and implementing strategies to reduce child mortality rates.

Lafia West LGA, like many other rural and semi-urban areas, faces challenges in improving maternal and child health. However, local government policies that focus on improving healthcare access, vaccination campaigns, maternal education, and hygiene practices have been introduced to address these challenges. This study aims to assess the impact of these local government strategies on child mortality reduction in Lafia West LGA.

Statement of the Problem

Despite national and local efforts to reduce child mortality, Lafia West LGA still experiences high rates of child deaths due to preventable causes. Although the local government has introduced several healthcare initiatives aimed at improving child health, there is a need for a comprehensive evaluation of these policies to determine their impact on reducing child mortality. This study aims to assess whether the local government’s strategies are effective in addressing the root causes of child mortality in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of local government health strategies on reducing child mortality rates in Lafia West LGA.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of maternal and child health programs in improving child survival rates in the area.

  3. To identify the challenges faced by the local government in implementing child health programs.

Research Questions

  1. What strategies has the local government in Lafia West LGA implemented to reduce child mortality?

  2. How effective are these strategies in improving child survival rates in Lafia West?

  3. What challenges does the local government face in implementing child health programs, and how can these be overcome?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Local government health strategies have significantly reduced child mortality rates in Lafia West LGA.

  2. Maternal and child health programs have been largely ineffective due to inadequate healthcare infrastructure and limited awareness.

  3. There are significant challenges, such as lack of funding and inadequate personnel, hindering the success of child health initiatives in Lafia West.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on local government health strategies in Lafia West LGA, Nasarawa State, . Limitations include limited data on child mortality rates at the local government level and potential bias from health officials involved in program implementation.
