Background of the Study
Nigeria is a multi-ethnic country with numerous ethnic groups coexisting in various regions. In some regions, ethnic minorities face discrimination in various aspects of life, including employment, education, and political participation. Jos North in Plateau State is a region characterized by ethnic diversity, where ethnic minorities, particularly the indigenous groups, sometimes experience marginalization in the context of access to resources, rights, and opportunities.
Discrimination against ethnic minorities has been a persistent issue in Nigeria, despite the country’s commitment to equality under the law. This study will examine the nature and extent of ethnic discrimination in Jos North, focusing on the indigenous minority groups and how these issues impact their lives, access to resources, and overall socio-political inclusion.
Statement of the Problem
Despite Nigeria’s legal framework against discrimination, ethnic minorities in Jos North still encounter significant social, political, and economic challenges. There is a lack of research that specifically investigates how ethnic minorities in Jos North experience discrimination, especially in light of the state’s history of ethnic and religious conflicts. This study will assess the extent of discrimination faced by ethnic minorities in Jos North and explore the impact of such discrimination on their development.
