Background of the Study
Education is a critical factor for socio-economic development, and the education of girls is particularly important for fostering sustainable growth and development. In Nigeria, despite efforts to improve access to education for all, girls, particularly in rural areas, still face significant barriers to accessing education. These barriers include cultural norms, economic constraints, gender-based violence, early marriage, and lack of school infrastructure. In Jos East Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, the local government has initiated several education programs targeting the girl-child to address these issues and improve their access to education.
Local government education programs have been critical in addressing regional disparities in education access, especially for girls. In Jos East, initiatives such as scholarships, awareness campaigns, provision of school materials, and building female-friendly school environments have been designed to mitigate the challenges faced by girls. However, there is limited research on the impact of these programs, particularly in the rural and semi-urban areas of Jos East. This study aims to appraise the effectiveness of these programs, exploring how local government interventions have contributed to enhancing the girl-child’s access to education.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the introduction of various local government education programs in Jos East LGA, there is little empirical evidence regarding their effectiveness in improving access to education for the girl-child. Barriers such as socio-cultural norms and economic limitations continue to hinder the participation of girls in education. This study seeks to assess how effective local government education programs have been in addressing these barriers and promoting gender equality in education.

To identify the challenges faced by the local government in implementing girl-child education programs.
To explore the socio-cultural and economic factors affecting girl-child education in Jos East LGA.
