Background of the Study
Human rights education (HRE) is an essential tool for promoting respect, understanding, and protection of fundamental rights. In Nigeria, the importance of human rights education in shaping the attitudes of the younger generation has been widely acknowledged. Secondary schools, being an integral part of the education system, play a pivotal role in educating students about their rights and responsibilities as citizens. In Kebbi State, where the awareness of human rights has historically been low, this education becomes crucial in fostering a culture of respect for the dignity and rights of individuals.
The Nigerian government, through various policies, has introduced human rights education as a part of the curriculum in schools across the country. However, the extent to which this education is being implemented and its impact on students' understanding of human rights remains uncertain, particularly in Kebbi State. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of human rights education in secondary schools in Kebbi, assessing how well students understand human rights issues and how they apply this knowledge in their daily lives.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the introduction of human rights education in Nigerian schools, there are concerns about its effectiveness, particularly in rural and underdeveloped regions like Kebbi State. The level of awareness among secondary school students about human rights and their ability to exercise these rights in real-life situations remains unclear. The lack of comprehensive evaluations of human rights education in the state creates a gap in understanding the impact of these educational initiatives. This study seeks to address these gaps and provide insights into how human rights education can be better implemented and utilized in Kebbi's secondary schools.

The limitations include the possible bias in responses from students and teachers due to the sensitive nature of human rights topics, and the availability of data on the exact implementation and outcomes of human rights education.
