Background of the Study

Poverty remains one of the primary drivers of violent extremism and youth recruitment into armed groups in various parts of the world, particularly in conflict-ridden areas. In Nigeria, regions with high poverty rates, such as Yobe State, have seen an alarming increase in the recruitment of young people into extremist groups like Boko Haram. Fika Local Government Area (LGA), situated in the northeastern part of the state, has experienced a surge in youth involvement with insurgent groups due to a combination of socio-economic factors, including unemployment, illiteracy, and lack of access to basic services.

Research has consistently shown that poverty creates an environment in which young people are vulnerable to manipulation by extremist groups. These groups often promise financial rewards, ideological fulfillment, and a sense of belonging. In Fika LGA, the interplay between economic deprivation, lack of education, and the unavailability of legitimate economic opportunities has made it easier for extremist ideologies to take root. This study seeks to investigate how poverty contributes to youth recruitment into extremist groups in the area, aiming to offer insights that could inform policies and interventions aimed at mitigating this troubling phenomenon.

Statement of the Problem

Youth in Fika LGA are increasingly being drawn to extremist groups due to the economic hardships they face. Poverty exacerbates the vulnerability of young people, pushing them towards groups that promise economic stability, empowerment, and identity. This study will explore how poverty contributes to youth involvement in extremist groups, with a focus on identifying socio-economic patterns that can be addressed to prevent further recruitment.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of poverty in driving youth recruitment into extremist groups in Fika LGA.

  2. To explore the socio-economic factors that increase the vulnerability of young people to radicalization.

  3. To recommend policies and strategies that can reduce youth recruitment into extremist groups in Fika LGA.

Research Questions

  1. How does poverty contribute to youth recruitment into extremist groups in Fika LGA?

  2. What are the socio-economic factors that make youth more susceptible to recruitment by extremist groups in Fika LGA?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce youth involvement in extremist activities in Fika LGA?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Poverty in Fika LGA significantly contributes to the recruitment of youth into extremist groups.

  2. Lack of education and employment opportunities are key socio-economic factors that increase youth vulnerability to radicalization in Fika LGA.

  3. Interventions focused on poverty alleviation can reduce the likelihood of youth recruitment into extremist groups in Fika LGA.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on Fika LGA, Yobe State, covering a period . Limitations include the challenge of accessing data due to security concerns in conflict zones and the potential reluctance of affected individuals to speak openly about their experiences.
