Background of the Study

Vigilante justice has become increasingly common in conflict zones across Nigeria, especially in areas where the formal justice system is either absent or ineffective. In Katsina-Ala, Benue State, the rise of vigilante groups is a response to the increasing insecurity due to armed conflicts, banditry, and communal violence. These groups, often composed of local community members, take law enforcement into their own hands, dispensing justice outside the formal judicial system.

While vigilante justice may offer immediate relief to communities facing threats, its effectiveness in promoting long-term peace and stability remains controversial. There is a concern that vigilante justice may undermine the rule of law by encouraging lawlessness, human rights violations, and further violence. This study will explore the role of vigilante justice in Katsina-Ala, assessing its impact on the rule of law and examining the potential risks it poses to the formal justice system in conflict zones.

Statement of the Problem

The rise of vigilante groups in conflict zones such as Katsina-Ala presents a complex challenge for the rule of law. While these groups may help reduce immediate security threats, their activities may also lead to abuses of power, violations of human rights, and a disregard for the formal judicial process. This study seeks to examine how vigilante justice is affecting the rule of law in Katsina-Ala, with a particular focus on the consequences for long-term peace and security in the region.
