Background of the Study
Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has prioritized the growth and development of Abuja, including its tourism sector. Asokoro, a prominent area in Abuja, is home to key government institutions, embassies, and upscale residential and commercial properties, making it a hub for both business and leisure tourism. Under Wike’s leadership, the FCT has seen efforts to improve infrastructure, enhance the city’s cultural appeal, and promote tourism as a means to diversify the local economy.
This study aims to assess the impact of Wike’s policies and actions on the tourism sector in Asokoro, focusing on initiatives to attract tourists, improve amenities, and integrate the tourism sector with other parts of the city’s economy. Wike’s role in fostering a conducive environment for the growth of tourism, including public-private partnerships, infrastructure improvements, and promotional efforts, will be evaluated to understand his contribution to boosting tourism in the region.
Statement of the Problem
Despite Abuja’s potential as a tourism destination, the sector has faced challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, underdeveloped tourist attractions, and limited marketing. While Wike’s administration has introduced several initiatives aimed at revamping Abuja’s tourism, it is unclear how these efforts have specifically impacted Asokoro, given its unique status within the city. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the effectiveness of Wike’s policies on tourism development in Asokoro.
