Background of the Study
Since becoming the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister in 2023, Nyesom Wike has prioritized the improvement of Abuja’s urban infrastructure, including urban renewal projects that aim to transform informal settlements into more organized and sustainable urban areas. Gudu, located in the heart of the FCT, has been one of the key areas targeted by Wike’s urban renewal initiatives. The objective of these projects is to modernize infrastructure, improve housing, and provide better access to services such as water, electricity, and roads. These changes are expected to have a significant impact on the local commercial environment, particularly in terms of attracting investment, enhancing trade, and improving business opportunities.

This study aims to appraise Wike’s urban renewal projects in Gudu and their direct impact on commercial activities. The study will focus on how infrastructural improvements have influenced business operations, including the growth of local businesses, investment opportunities, and economic activities in the area.

Statement of the Problem
Gudu, like many urban areas in the FCT, faces challenges related to urbanization, including inadequate infrastructure, traffic congestion, and poorly planned markets and commercial spaces. Wike’s urban renewal projects aim to address these issues, but it remains unclear whether they have had the desired effect on the local business environment. This study will evaluate whether the urban renewal projects have successfully improved commercial activities in Gudu or if challenges remain.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of Nyesom Wike’s urban renewal projects on commercial activities in Gudu.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of infrastructural improvements in Gudu in attracting businesses and investment.

  3. To identify the challenges faced by businesses in Gudu as a result of the urban renewal projects.

Research Questions

  1. How have Nyesom Wike’s urban renewal projects impacted commercial activities in Gudu?

  2. What infrastructural improvements have been made in Gudu as part of the urban renewal projects?

  3. What challenges do businesses face in Gudu as a result of the urban renewal projects?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nyesom Wike’s urban renewal projects have significantly improved commercial activities in Gudu.

  2. Infrastructural improvements in Gudu have attracted more businesses and investment.

  3. Businesses in Gudu face challenges related to the implementation and sustainability of urban renewal projects.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on assessing the impact of Nyesom Wike’s urban renewal projects on commercial activities in Gudu, FCT, during his tenure as FCT Minister from 2023 onwards. The study will focus on the local business environment in Gudu and will not address urban renewal projects in other parts of the FCT. The research will also not explore long-term outcomes beyond the current period of evaluation.
