Background of the Study

Community-led peacebuilding initiatives have become essential in conflict-prone regions, where grassroots efforts often play a critical role in restoring peace and fostering reconciliation. In Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State, inter-communal conflicts between ethnic and religious groups have persisted for decades, often leading to displacement, loss of lives, and economic disruption (Adeyemi & Usman, 2023). Given the limitations of government interventions in resolving conflicts, community-driven approaches have emerged as viable solutions to promote dialogue, mutual understanding, and sustainable peace (Ibrahim & Okafor, 2024).

Community-led initiatives often involve traditional leaders, religious organizations, women’s groups, and youth associations working together to mediate disputes and implement conflict prevention strategies. These grassroots efforts are typically more effective in addressing local grievances because they are rooted in the community’s cultural and social dynamics (Ogunyemi & Bala, 2025). However, the success of these initiatives depends on various factors, including the availability of resources, community participation, and support from governmental and non-governmental organizations.

This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of community-led peacebuilding initiatives in Takum LGA, identifying best practices and challenges in grassroots conflict resolution efforts.

Statement of the Problem

Despite numerous peacebuilding efforts in Takum LGA, inter-communal conflicts remain a recurring challenge. Many conflicts are fueled by competition over land, political representation, and ethnic tensions, leading to repeated cycles of violence (Abubakar & Danjuma, 2024). While community-led initiatives have been instrumental in resolving disputes, their effectiveness remains largely undocumented, and challenges such as inadequate funding, lack of coordination, and external political influences threaten their sustainability.

There is a need to critically assess the impact of these grassroots initiatives on peacebuilding, evaluating their successes, limitations, and areas for improvement. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of community-led approaches will help in developing more effective and sustainable conflict resolution mechanisms in Takum LGA.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of community-led initiatives in peacebuilding in Takum LGA.

  2. To assess the challenges faced by grassroots peacebuilding efforts.

  3. To propose strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of community-driven conflict resolution mechanisms.

Research Questions

  1. What role do community-led initiatives play in peacebuilding in Takum LGA?

  2. What are the key challenges faced by grassroots peacebuilding efforts?

  3. What strategies can improve the effectiveness of community-driven peacebuilding initiatives?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Community-led initiatives significantly contribute to peacebuilding in Takum LGA.

  2. Grassroots peacebuilding efforts face substantial challenges that limit their effectiveness.

  3. Strengthening community participation and external support can enhance grassroots peacebuilding initiatives.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on community-led peacebuilding initiatives in Takum LGA between 2015 and 2025. Limitations may include difficulties in accessing detailed records of informal peace processes and possible biases from community leaders in reporting successes and challenges.
