Background of the Study
Traditional conflict resolution mechanisms have been a cornerstone of community-based governance and social cohesion in many parts of Nigeria, including Zango Kataf Local Government Area (LGA) in Kaduna State. The area, home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, has experienced various forms of communal tensions and conflicts, often exacerbated by land disputes, resource scarcity, and political differences. In response to these challenges, traditional leaders and community elders in Zango Kataf have played a pivotal role in resolving disputes and promoting peace within the community.
Traditional conflict resolution in Zango Kataf typically involves the use of local customs, mediation by elders, and the involvement of community and religious leaders. These mechanisms are often considered more accessible and culturally relevant than formal judicial processes, offering solutions that are rooted in the values and practices of the community. However, the efficacy of these mechanisms in addressing the increasingly complex nature of modern conflicts—especially those involving ethnic and religious dimensions—has been a subject of debate.
This study seeks to evaluate the role and effectiveness of traditional conflict resolution mechanisms in Zango Kataf LGA, particularly in addressing communal conflicts that have erupted in the region in recent years. The goal is to assess how these traditional systems have adapted to changing dynamics and how they contribute to the overall peacebuilding efforts in the area.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the long-standing reliance on traditional conflict resolution mechanisms in Zango Kataf, the area has witnessed persistent tensions and occasional outbreaks of violence. While elders and traditional rulers have been key actors in resolving local conflicts, questions remain about the sustainability and effectiveness of these approaches, especially in the face of modern challenges such as political interference, youth radicalization, and ethnic and religious divides. This study will critically examine the strengths and limitations of these traditional conflict resolution mechanisms in addressing communal disputes and fostering long-term peace in the region.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the effectiveness of traditional conflict resolution mechanisms in Zango Kataf LGA in managing communal conflicts.
To identify the challenges faced by traditional leaders in implementing conflict resolution strategies in Zango Kataf LGA.
To recommend ways to strengthen traditional conflict resolution mechanisms for sustainable peacebuilding in Zango Kataf.
Research Questions
How effective are traditional conflict resolution mechanisms in resolving communal conflicts in Zango Kataf LGA?
What are the challenges faced by traditional leaders in applying conflict resolution mechanisms in Zango Kataf LGA?
What recommendations can be made to improve traditional conflict resolution practices in Zango Kataf LGA?
Research Hypotheses
Traditional conflict resolution mechanisms in Zango Kataf LGA are effective in reducing communal violence and fostering peace.
Political interference and youth radicalization pose significant challenges to the success of traditional conflict resolution mechanisms in Zango Kataf LGA.
Strengthening collaboration between traditional leaders and formal security agencies will improve the effectiveness of conflict resolution in Zango Kataf LGA.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the role of traditional conflict resolution mechanisms in Zango Kataf LGA, examining the period between 2015 and 2025. Data will be collected through interviews with traditional leaders, community members, and local government officials. Limitations include potential biases in responses due to the sensitive nature of communal conflicts and the challenge of accessing conflict zones.
