Background of the Study
Ethnic militia groups have become increasingly prominent in various conflict zones in Nigeria, often operating as paramilitary organizations that defend or promote the interests of particular ethnic groups. Gboko Local Government Area in Benue State has been no stranger to ethnic-based conflicts, particularly those involving farmers and herders, as well as tensions between various ethnic groups vying for political dominance and territorial control. The presence and actions of ethnic militias in these conflicts have escalated violence and complicated peace efforts. These groups, often formed out of a sense of ethnic solidarity or political marginalization, are involved in a range of violent activities, including attacks on rival groups, political manipulation, and land disputes.
The role of ethnic militias in conflict dynamics has significant implications for both local governance and national security. Statement of the Problem
Ethnic militia groups in Gboko LGA have contributed to the escalation of conflicts, undermining efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region. The inability of government and security agencies to effectively curb militia activities has exacerbated insecurity, leading to loss of life, destruction of property, and displacement of local populations. While some argue that these groups serve as a form of self-defense for marginalized communities, others view them as exacerbating tensions and further polarizing ethnic relations. This study will investigate the role of ethnic militias in the conflicts within Gboko, exploring their origins, motivations, and consequences for the region.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on ethnic militia groups operating within Gboko LGA, Benue State, with particular emphasis on the period between 2010 and 2025. Data will be collected from interviews with local authorities, ethnic leaders, security personnel, and affected communities. Limitations include the potential difficulty in accessing militia members for interviews and the sensitive nature of the subject, which may limit participant cooperation.
