Background of the Study
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play a critical role in addressing the root causes of conflicts, promoting peace, and facilitating the resolution of disputes in conflict-affected areas. In Nigeria, especially in areas like Makurdi LGA in Benue State, NGOs have been instrumental in conflict resolution, providing resources and expertise where the government may be limited. The state has experienced recurring ethnic and communal conflicts, often triggered by disputes over land, resources, and political power. These conflicts have caused displacement, loss of life, and disrupted social and economic life.
NGOs working in Makurdi have adopted various strategies, including dialogue facilitation, humanitarian aid, peacebuilding workshops, and advocacy for human rights. Their efforts complement government initiatives and sometimes fill gaps where state interventions may be insufficient. The impact of NGOs in conflict resolution, however, remains underexplored, especially in Benue State. This study aims to assess the role of NGOs in conflict resolution in Makurdi and evaluate their effectiveness in fostering lasting peace.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the significant presence of NGOs in conflict-prone areas of Benue State, the region continues to experience recurrent violent clashes. The question arises as to whether the interventions of NGOs in conflict resolution have been effective or if there are gaps in their strategies. While some NGOs have made strides in conflict mitigation, others face challenges such as insufficient funding, limited local engagement, and the politicization of their activities. This study will examine the role of NGOs in conflict resolution in Makurdi and assess whether their efforts have led to meaningful peacebuilding outcomes.
