Background of the Study
Pastoral migration has been a longstanding tradition in many parts of Nigeria, especially in the northern region, where nomadic herders move across vast distances in search of grazing land and water for their livestock. In Riyom LGA of Plateau State, this migratory practice has been a source of both economic benefit and social tension. The movement of pastoralists, primarily from the Fulani ethnic group, through agricultural communities often leads to clashes with settled farmers. These clashes are triggered by competition for land and resources, particularly during the dry season when pasture becomes scarce.
The increasing pressure on land due to population growth, climate change, and urbanization has intensified these conflicts. The growing frequency of violent encounters between herders and farmers has had significant implications for community relations in Riyom LGA, with tensions rising along ethnic and economic lines. While pastoral migration provides livelihood opportunities for herders, it also disrupts social harmony, leading to displacement, loss of life, and long-lasting intercommunal divisions. This study seeks to investigate the impact of pastoral migration on community relations in Riyom LGA, focusing on both the conflicts it causes and the potential solutions to promote peaceful coexistence.
Statement of the Problem
In Riyom LGA, the tensions resulting from pastoral migration have led to recurring conflicts between herders and farmers, with significant implications for social cohesion. The movements of pastoralists through predominantly farming communities have created a volatile environment, where traditional community relations have been disrupted. While pastoral migration is essential for the livelihood of herders, the resulting competition for resources has led to violent clashes and escalating insecurity. The problem lies in the lack of effective mechanisms for resolving conflicts between these two groups, leading to a breakdown in community relations. This study aims to explore the causes of these tensions and the extent to which pastoral migration impacts community relations in Riyom LGA.
