Background of the Study
Political violence in Nigeria has become a significant issue that affects democratic processes, especially during election periods. Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, has experienced various forms of political violence in recent years, including attacks on political opponents, the destruction of property, and the intimidation of voters. This violence has raised concerns about its impact on the electoral process, as it undermines the integrity of elections and dissuades citizens from participating in the democratic process. Political violence, often fueled by political party rivalry and a lack of trust in the electoral system, creates an environment where free and fair elections are difficult to achieve.
The presence of violence during elections in Lafia has led to voter apathy, the suppression of opposition voices, and a general erosion of confidence in the electoral process. The role of security agencies, electoral bodies, and political actors in addressing and preventing political violence has been subject to significant debate. This study seeks to examine the effects of political violence on electoral processes in Lafia LGA, with particular emphasis on its influence on voter turnout, election outcomes, and democratic consolidation.
Statement of the Problem
