Background of the Study
The ongoing insurgency in northeastern Nigeria, particularly the Boko Haram conflict, has had devastating impacts on the lives of children. Bama, a town in Borno State, has been one of the areas most affected by the insurgency, with children bearing the brunt of the violence, displacement, and trauma. Children in Bama have been exposed to extreme forms of violence, including abductions, forced recruitment by armed groups, and the loss of family members. These traumatic experiences have left many children with lasting psychological effects that impact their emotional, cognitive, and social development (Adamu & Yusuf, 2024).

The psychological toll of conflict on children is often profound, manifesting as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and behavioral disorders. In conflict zones like Bama, children are particularly vulnerable due to their dependence on adults for protection and care. The lack of adequate mental health services and the disruption of education further exacerbate the situation, leaving children with limited support to recover from their traumatic experiences.

This study aims to assess the psychological effects of conflict on children in Bama LGA, examining the nature and extent of the trauma experienced, as well as the availability of support systems for affected children.

Statement of the Problem
The psychological effects of conflict on children in Bama LGA are a critical concern, yet the scale and nature of these effects have not been sufficiently explored. Although there are efforts to provide aid to internally displaced persons, including children, the lack of focused psychological support and rehabilitation services for these children means that many continue to suffer from untreated trauma. This study seeks to assess the psychological impact of conflict on children in Bama and identify the gaps in existing support services.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the psychological effects of conflict on children in Bama LGA.

  2. To identify the coping mechanisms used by children affected by conflict in Bama LGA.

  3. To evaluate the availability and effectiveness of psychological support services for children in Bama LGA.

Research Questions

  1. What are the psychological effects of conflict on children in Bama LGA?

  2. What coping mechanisms do children in Bama use to deal with the trauma of conflict?

  3. How effective are the existing psychological support services for children affected by conflict in Bama LGA?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Children in Bama LGA have experienced significant psychological trauma due to exposure to conflict, including symptoms of PTSD and depression.

  2. Coping mechanisms used by children in Bama LGA include avoidance, dissociation, and withdrawal, which are insufficient to address the trauma caused by conflict.

  3. The availability of psychological support services in Bama LGA is limited and insufficient to meet the needs of children affected by conflict.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the psychological effects of conflict on children in Bama LGA, Borno State, from 2010 to 2025. Limitations include difficulties in accessing conflict-affected children due to security concerns and the potential reluctance of parents or guardians to allow participation in studies involving trauma.
