Background of the Study
Radicalization, the process by which individuals or groups adopt extreme ideologies, has become a significant factor in youth involvement in violent conflicts in Nigeria, particularly in the northeastern region. Potiskum, a prominent town in Yobe State, has been severely affected by the insurgency led by Boko Haram, where many young people have been recruited or coerced into violent activities. Radicalization among the youth in this region has contributed to widespread insecurity, including attacks on government institutions, schools, and civilian populations (Usman & Ali, 2023).
This phenomenon of radicalization is influenced by a combination of socio-economic factors, such as high unemployment, lack of educational opportunities, and exposure to extremist ideologies through social media and community networks. Many youth in Potiskum, feeling marginalized and disenfranchised, are increasingly drawn to violent movements that promise a sense of purpose, identity, and belonging. The shift in mindset towards radical ideologies not only jeopardizes individual lives but also threatens the social fabric of the community, with young people being at the center of these violent conflicts.
This study seeks to examine the effect of radicalization on youth participation in violent conflicts, particularly focusing on how radicalized youth engage in conflict, the factors driving their involvement, and the implications for community peace and security in Potiskum LGA.
Statement of the Problem
Radicalization has been identified as a major driver of youth involvement in violent conflicts in Potiskum, yet little research has been done to understand its causes, processes, and outcomes in this specific context. While the role of radicalized youth in violent movements is well documented in other regions, the unique socio-cultural and economic conditions of Potiskum have not been sufficiently explored. This study seeks to investigate the effect of radicalization on youth participation in violent conflicts in Potiskum LGA, identify the underlying factors driving youth radicalization, and evaluate the consequences of this trend on community security and cohesion.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the effect of radicalization on youth participation in violent conflicts in Potiskum LGA.
To identify the socio-economic and psychological factors contributing to the radicalization of youth in Potiskum.
To recommend interventions to prevent youth radicalization and mitigate its impact on community peace and security in Potiskum.
Research Questions
