Background of the Study
Deforestation is a major environmental issue that threatens biodiversity, soil health, and local climate patterns. In Argungu Local Government Area (LGA), Kebbi State, economic activities such as agriculture, logging, and the production of charcoal have been identified as significant drivers of deforestation. While these activities are vital to the local economy, they also contribute to the depletion of forest resources, leading to environmental degradation. This study explores the relationship between economic activities and deforestation in Argungu LGA, aiming to identify how different economic activities contribute to deforestation and how this impacts the environment and livelihoods (Salihu & Usman, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The increasing demand for agricultural land and forest products in Argungu LGA has led to a rapid decline in forest cover. Deforestation has adverse effects on the environment, including the loss of biodiversity and the disruption of local water cycles. However, the precise link between economic activities and deforestation in Argungu remains unclear. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing the role of various economic activities in deforestation processes in the area.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
• To assess the relationship between economic activities (such as agriculture, logging, and charcoal production) and deforestation in Argungu LGA.
• To evaluate the environmental and socio-economic consequences of deforestation in the region.
• To propose sustainable solutions for balancing economic activities and forest conservation in Argungu.
1.4 Research Questions
• How do economic activities in Argungu LGA contribute to deforestation?
• What are the environmental impacts of deforestation in Argungu LGA?
• How can deforestation be mitigated while maintaining the economic benefits of these activities?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
• H1: Economic activities, particularly agriculture and charcoal production, are significant contributors to deforestation in Argungu LGA.
• H2: Deforestation in Argungu LGA has resulted in negative environmental impacts, including soil erosion and loss of biodiversity.
• H3: Sustainable practices in agriculture and forestry can reduce deforestation in Argungu while supporting local economic activities.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will provide valuable insights into how economic activities can be managed to minimize deforestation. The study will offer recommendations to policymakers, local authorities, and community leaders in Argungu to ensure that economic development is balanced with environmental conservation (Salihu & Usman, 2024).
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on Argungu LGA and its economic activities, particularly agriculture, charcoal production, and logging. It will explore the environmental impacts of deforestation and propose sustainable solutions. Limitations include potential difficulties in measuring the exact contribution of each economic activity to deforestation.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
• Deforestation: The large-scale removal or destruction of forests, typically for agricultural, industrial, or commercial purposes.
• Economic Activities: Human-driven activities such as agriculture, logging, and mining that contribute to economic growth and development.
• Sustainable Development: Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
