Background of the Study

Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, has experienced a significant influx of migrants, particularly due to the ongoing conflict in the northeast region of Nigeria. This migration has placed immense pressure on the local environment, leading to issues such as deforestation, depletion of water resources, and overuse of agricultural lands. Migrants, often seeking refuge in urban areas, engage in practices that exacerbate environmental degradation, including the expansion of informal settlements, increased demand for firewood, and unregulated waste disposal. Understanding the impact of migration on environmental resources is essential for designing sustainable development strategies that balance human needs with environmental conservation. This study seeks to assess the extent to which migration has affected environmental resources in Maiduguri LGA, with a focus on land, water, and forest resources (Tukur & Idris, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The influx of migrants into Maiduguri has created numerous challenges for local environmental resources. Unsustainable practices by migrants, compounded by limited infrastructure and resources in the city, have contributed to the degradation of water bodies, forests, and agricultural lands. These environmental challenges pose risks to food security, water availability, and biodiversity. This study will examine the link between migration and environmental degradation in Maiduguri, offering insights into how migration influences the sustainability of environmental resources.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

• To assess the impact of migration on land, water, and forest resources in Maiduguri LGA.

• To identify the key environmental challenges associated with migration in the area.

• To propose solutions to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of migration in Maiduguri.

1.4 Research Questions

• What is the impact of migration on land, water, and forest resources in Maiduguri?

• How have migration-induced practices contributed to environmental degradation in Maiduguri LGA?

• What strategies can be implemented to reduce the environmental impact of migration?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

• H1: Migration has significantly contributed to the depletion of land, water, and forest resources in Maiduguri LGA.

• H2: The expansion of informal settlements and the increased demand for natural resources by migrants have exacerbated environmental degradation.

• H3: Sustainable migration management strategies can help reduce the negative environmental impact in Maiduguri.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will shed light on the relationship between migration and environmental degradation in Maiduguri. It will help local government officials, environmental planners, and policymakers understand the environmental consequences of migration and develop strategies to address these issues. The study will also contribute to the discourse on sustainable urban development and environmental management in areas experiencing high levels of displacement and migration (Tukur & Idris, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the impact of migration on environmental resources in Maiduguri LGA. It will examine changes in land use, water availability, and forest cover resulting from migration. Limitations include potential difficulties in accessing migration-related data and the complexity of isolating migration-induced environmental changes from other factors.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Migration: The movement of people from one location to another, often due to conflict, economic opportunity, or environmental conditions.

• Environmental Resources: Natural resources such as land, water, and forests that are vital for human survival and ecosystem health.

• Sustainable Development: Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
