Background of the Study

Reflective journaling is a teaching and learning strategy widely used in nursing education to enhance critical thinking, self-awareness, and clinical decision-making (Mezirow, 2023). By documenting their experiences, students engage in self-reflection, which fosters deeper learning and professional growth (Adeoye & Ibrahim, 2024). Reflective practice helps bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills, allowing students to analyze their clinical encounters and improve future performance (Ogunyemi et al., 2024).

Several studies indicate that reflective journaling enhances students' confidence, critical thinking, and ability to handle complex patient cases (Johnson & Usman, 2024). However, despite its benefits, reflective journaling is not consistently integrated into nursing education curricula in Nigeria, leading to gaps in experiential learning (Chinwe et al., 2023).

At the University of Jos College of Nursing, reflective journaling is part of the nursing education strategy, yet its effectiveness remains largely unexamined. This study seeks to evaluate how reflective journaling enhances nursing students' learning experiences and clinical competence.

Statement of the Problem

Nursing students often struggle with transitioning from theoretical knowledge to practical application in clinical settings. Many experience anxiety and uncertainty when faced with real-life patient care (Bello & Yusuf, 2024). Reflective journaling is recognized as a tool to facilitate learning, yet its effectiveness in Nigeria’s nursing education remains underexplored (Musa et al., 2023).

At the University of Jos College of Nursing, the extent to which reflective journaling enhances students' learning outcomes is unclear. This study aims to assess its effectiveness and propose recommendations for improving its implementation.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of reflective journaling on nursing students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  2. To evaluate students’ perceptions of reflective journaling as a learning tool.
  3. To determine the relationship between reflective journaling and clinical performance.

Research Questions

  1. How does reflective journaling influence nursing students' critical thinking?
  2. What are students' perceptions of reflective journaling in nursing education?
  3. What is the relationship between reflective journaling and clinical performance?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Reflective journaling significantly enhances nursing students' critical thinking skills.
  2. There is a significant relationship between reflective journaling and clinical performance.
  3. Students' perceptions of reflective journaling significantly affect their engagement with the practice.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on nursing students at the University of Jos College of Nursing. It will examine their use of reflective journaling and its impact on their clinical skills. Limitations include differences in students' engagement levels and variations in reflective journaling practices.

Definitions of Terms
