Ethical decision-making is an essential competency in nursing, as nurses frequently encounter complex ethical dilemmas that require sound judgment and adherence to professional standards (Smith et al., 2024). Ethical decision-making training is designed to equip nursing students with the necessary skills to navigate moral challenges, prioritize patient welfare, and uphold ethical principles such as autonomy, beneficence, and nonmaleficence (Johnson & Harris, 2023). Effective ethical decision-making is crucial for fostering trust in healthcare and ensuring that patient care is conducted with integrity and compassion.
At University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, nursing students receive ethics education as part of their curriculum. However, the extent to which ethical decision-making training influences their professional judgment remains unclear. Studies suggest that ethical training enhances students' ability to recognize ethical issues, analyze situations critically, and apply ethical reasoning in clinical settings (Brown & Miller, 2023). Additionally, ethical decision-making education helps students develop confidence in handling difficult patient interactions and making morally sound choices under pressure (Williams et al., 2024).
Despite these benefits, some scholars argue that ethical knowledge alone does not always translate into ethical practice. External factors such as institutional policies, workplace culture, and personal values can significantly impact a nurse’s ability to apply ethical principles in real-world settings (Taylor & Grant, 2023). This study aims to examine the effect of ethical decision-making training on nursing students' professional judgment at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and explore strategies to enhance ethical competency in nursing education.
Ethical dilemmas are common in nursing practice, and poor ethical decision-making can lead to compromised patient care, legal issues, and loss of public trust in the healthcare profession. While ethics education is integrated into nursing curricula, there is uncertainty regarding its effectiveness in shaping students' professional judgment (Adams & Stevenson, 2023). Some nursing students struggle to apply ethical principles in clinical practice due to inadequate training, lack of mentorship, or conflicting workplace dynamics (Gonzales & Mackey, 2023).
At University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, ethical decision-making training is provided to nursing students, but little is known about its impact on their ability to make ethical clinical judgments. This study seeks to assess whether ethical decision-making training significantly enhances nursing students' professional judgment and to identify factors that influence the application of ethical principles in real-world settings.
This study focuses on nursing students at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital who have undergone ethical decision-making training. It does not extend to practicing nurses or students from other healthcare disciplines. Limitations may include self-reported biases, variations in individual moral perspectives, and differences in ethical training approaches.
