Background of the Study

Waste management is a growing challenge in many urban areas, especially in rapidly developing cities like Jos North Local Government Area (LGA) in Plateau State. With the increasing population and industrial activities, the amount of waste generated has exceeded the capacity of traditional waste management systems. In response to this, community-based waste recycling initiatives have emerged as an effective approach to address waste management challenges. These initiatives involve local communities in collecting, sorting, and recycling waste materials, thereby promoting environmental sustainability while reducing landfill pressure. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of community-based waste recycling initiatives in Jos North, assessing their impact on waste reduction, environmental health, and community involvement in environmental conservation (Ogunyemi & Ibrahim, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In Jos North LGA, waste management remains a significant issue, exacerbated by inadequate infrastructure, improper waste disposal, and a lack of community participation in environmental conservation. While community-based waste recycling initiatives have been implemented, their effectiveness in reducing waste generation and promoting sustainable practices is not well documented. This study aims to investigate the extent to which these initiatives have contributed to improved waste management and environmental sustainability in Jos North.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

• To evaluate the effectiveness of community-based waste recycling initiatives in Jos North LGA.

• To assess the impact of waste recycling on reducing environmental pollution and promoting sustainability.

• To identify the challenges faced by communities in implementing waste recycling initiatives and suggest possible solutions.

1.4 Research Questions

• How effective are community-based waste recycling initiatives in reducing waste and promoting environmental sustainability in Jos North?

• What are the main challenges faced by communities in adopting waste recycling practices?

• How can community-based recycling initiatives be improved to further contribute to waste management in Jos North?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

• H1: Community-based waste recycling initiatives have significantly reduced waste generation and environmental pollution in Jos North.

• H2: The effectiveness of waste recycling initiatives is hindered by challenges such as lack of funding and community awareness.

• H3: Strengthening community participation will improve the success and sustainability of waste recycling initiatives in Jos North.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide critical insights into the role of community-based waste recycling initiatives in managing waste and promoting environmental sustainability in Jos North LGA. The findings will inform local government policies, community organizations, and environmental advocates about the potential benefits and challenges of such initiatives. By highlighting successful strategies, the study will also contribute to the wider movement for sustainable waste management practices in Nigeria (Ogunyemi & Ibrahim, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the evaluation of community-based waste recycling initiatives in Jos North LGA. Limitations may include challenges in accessing accurate data on the effectiveness of these initiatives and potential biases in community self-reporting of outcomes.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Community-Based Waste Recycling: Waste management initiatives that involve local communities in the collection, sorting, and recycling of waste materials.

• Environmental Sustainability: The ability to manage resources and waste in a way that minimizes environmental impact and preserves ecological balance.

• Waste Management: The process of handling waste materials, including collection, recycling, disposal, and reduction strategies.
