Background of the Study

Open defecation remains a significant public health concern in many parts of Nigeria, including Jalingo Local Government Area in Taraba State. This practice involves defecating in open spaces rather than using proper sanitation facilities, leading to the contamination of water sources with human waste. As a result, water quality deteriorates, posing a risk to public health, especially in rural communities where access to safe drinking water and sanitation services is limited. Open defecation has been linked to the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid, which can have devastating effects on the health and well-being of residents. This study aims to investigate the effects of open defecation on water quality in Jalingo, focusing on how this practice contributes to water contamination and the subsequent health risks (Kehinde & Ibrahim, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Open defecation in Jalingo has led to the contamination of water sources, particularly in rural areas where sanitation infrastructure is inadequate. This practice not only affects water quality but also contributes to the spread of diseases, making it a major public health concern. The study will explore the extent of water contamination due to open defecation and examine the health risks associated with poor sanitation in the region.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

• To assess the impact of open defecation on water quality in Jalingo Local Government Area.

• To examine the relationship between open defecation and the prevalence of waterborne diseases in Jalingo.

• To explore possible solutions for improving sanitation and water quality in Jalingo.

1.4 Research Questions

• How does open defecation contribute to the contamination of water sources in Jalingo?

• What is the relationship between open defecation and the prevalence of waterborne diseases in Jalingo?

• What measures can be taken to improve sanitation and water quality in Jalingo?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

• H1: Open defecation significantly contributes to the contamination of water sources in Jalingo.

• H2: Open defecation is directly associated with an increase in waterborne diseases in Jalingo.

• H3: Improving sanitation practices will lead to better water quality and a reduction in waterborne diseases in Jalingo.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide valuable information on the relationship between open defecation and water quality, shedding light on the public health risks associated with poor sanitation practices in Jalingo. The findings will be crucial for policymakers, local health authorities, and NGOs working to improve water sanitation and public health. The study will also support efforts to raise awareness about the importance of proper sanitation and encourage the adoption of cleaner, safer practices in the region (Kehinde & Ibrahim, 2023).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on open defecation and its effects on water quality in Jalingo Local Government Area. Limitations include challenges in accessing accurate data on water contamination levels and the reluctance of some communities to disclose sanitation practices due to cultural and social factors.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Open Defecation: The practice of defecating in open spaces rather than using proper sanitation facilities.

• Waterborne Diseases: Diseases that are spread through contaminated water, such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid.

• Water Quality: The cleanliness and safety of water, determined by its physical, chemical, and biological characteristics.
