Background of the Study

With the increasing global aging population, geriatric care has become a critical component of healthcare. Older adults are at a higher risk of chronic diseases, including hypertension, diabetes, dementia, and osteoarthritis, requiring specialized healthcare services (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). The quality of care for elderly patients is directly linked to healthcare providers’ knowledge and understanding of geriatric care and age-related diseases.

Nurses, being frontline caregivers, play a crucial role in managing geriatric patients. Studies have shown that inadequate training in geriatric care contributes to poor patient outcomes, delayed diagnoses, and ineffective treatment plans (Adegboye et al., 2023). Despite the increasing elderly population in Nigeria, there is limited emphasis on geriatric care education in nursing curricula, leading to gaps in knowledge and practice (Olowookere & Ajayi, 2023). This study evaluates the level of nurses' understanding of geriatric care and age-related diseases in Gombe State Specialist Hospital.

Statement of the Problem

Geriatric patients often present with multiple comorbidities requiring a holistic approach to care. However, studies indicate that many nurses lack adequate knowledge of geriatric syndromes and best practices in elderly care, leading to mismanagement and increased hospital readmissions (Chukwu et al., 2024).

In Gombe State Specialist Hospital, where a significant portion of patients are elderly, it is unclear whether nurses possess adequate training and understanding of geriatric care. A lack of geriatric expertise among nurses could negatively impact the quality of healthcare services offered to older adults. This study, therefore, investigates the level of knowledge and preparedness of nurses in managing age-related diseases.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess nurses' understanding of geriatric care principles and age-related diseases.
  2. To evaluate the level of geriatric-specific training received by nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital.
  3. To identify challenges affecting nurses' ability to provide quality geriatric care.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of nurses' understanding of geriatric care and age-related diseases?
  2. To what extent have nurses received specialized training in geriatric care?
  3. What are the barriers to effective geriatric care in Gombe State Specialist Hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses' understanding of geriatric care and age-related diseases is not significantly high.
  2. Nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital have not received significant specialized training in geriatric care.
  3. There are no significant barriers to geriatric care provision among nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital, particularly those working in medical, surgical, and outpatient units. Limitations may include self-reported biases and variability in nurses’ exposure to geriatric patients.

Definitions of Terms

  • Geriatric Care: Specialized healthcare services provided to elderly patients.
  • Age-Related Diseases: Chronic conditions that are more prevalent among older adults, such as dementia and osteoporosis.
  • Comorbidities: The presence of two or more chronic diseases in an individual.
