Background of the Study

Neonatal jaundice, a common condition among newborns, remains a leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality when not properly managed. It is characterized by elevated bilirubin levels, which, if untreated, can lead to severe complications such as kernicterus and neurological impairments (Boskabadi et al., 2024). Early detection and appropriate management by nurses are crucial in reducing the risks associated with the condition.

Continuous professional education (CPE) plays a vital role in enhancing nurses' knowledge and clinical competency. Studies have shown that ongoing training improves healthcare providers’ ability to diagnose, manage, and educate caregivers about neonatal jaundice (Rahman et al., 2023). However, in many healthcare settings, including Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, there is often limited access to structured neonatal jaundice training for nurses. This study evaluates the impact of CPE on nurses' knowledge, decision-making, and adherence to best practices in managing neonatal jaundice.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of clinical guidelines for neonatal jaundice management, studies indicate a knowledge gap among nurses, leading to delays in diagnosis and inadequate treatment (Adeyemi & Usman, 2023). Many nurses may lack updated knowledge regarding risk factors, diagnostic tools, and treatment modalities, which can negatively impact neonatal outcomes.

In Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, neonatal jaundice remains a significant concern, and limited studies have assessed whether continuous professional education enhances nurses' competency in its management. This study investigates whether CPE improves nurses' knowledge, promotes adherence to clinical guidelines, and ultimately improves neonatal care.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of continuous professional education on nurses' knowledge of neonatal jaundice.
  2. To examine nurses' ability to recognize and manage neonatal jaundice following professional education.
  3. To determine the challenges nurses face in accessing continuous professional education on neonatal care.

Research Questions

  1. How does continuous professional education affect nurses' knowledge of neonatal jaundice?
  2. What impact does continuous education have on nurses' ability to recognize and manage neonatal jaundice?
  3. What challenges hinder nurses from accessing continuous professional education on neonatal care?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Continuous professional education does not significantly improve nurses' knowledge of neonatal jaundice.
  2. Continuous professional education does not significantly enhance nurses' ability to recognize and manage neonatal jaundice.
  3. There are no significant challenges in accessing continuous professional education on neonatal care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on nurses at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, with an emphasis on those working in neonatal and pediatric units. Limitations include potential variations in prior knowledge levels and the availability of professional education programs.

Definitions of Terms

  • Neonatal Jaundice: A medical condition in newborns characterized by yellowing of the skin due to high bilirubin levels.
  • Continuous Professional Education (CPE): Ongoing training programs designed to update healthcare professionals on the latest clinical practices.
  • Kernicterus: A severe form of neonatal jaundice leading to brain damage.
