Background of the Study

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a cornerstone of modern nursing education, ensuring that clinical decisions are guided by the latest research, patient preferences, and clinical expertise (Melnyk et al., 2024). Integrating EBP into nursing training enhances students’ ability to critically appraise research, apply best practices, and improve patient outcomes.

Despite the global emphasis on EBP, its implementation in Nigerian nursing education remains inconsistent. Many nursing students lack sufficient exposure to EBP principles due to limited access to research resources and insufficient faculty training in evidence-based methodologies (Okonkwo & Adeyemi, 2023). At the University of Abuja College of Nursing, there is a need to evaluate whether EBP education is effectively equipping students with the necessary skills for research-informed practice.

Statement of the Problem

Nursing education must evolve to ensure that graduates are equipped with critical thinking skills and the ability to integrate research findings into clinical practice. However, many nursing students struggle with applying EBP due to gaps in their training (Williams & Hassan, 2024).

At the University of Abuja College of Nursing, EBP is included in the curriculum, but its effectiveness in preparing students for real-world clinical decision-making remains unclear. This study evaluates the effectiveness of EBP education and explores areas for improvement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of evidence-based practice education in nursing training.
  2. To examine nursing students’ ability to apply EBP in clinical settings.
  3. To identify challenges in implementing EBP education and propose solutions.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is evidence-based practice education in nursing training?
  2. How well do nursing students apply EBP principles in clinical practice?
  3. What challenges hinder the implementation of EBP education, and how can they be addressed?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Evidence-based practice education does not significantly enhance nursing students’ clinical decision-making skills.
  2. Nursing students do not effectively apply EBP principles in clinical settings.
  3. There are no significant challenges in implementing EBP education in nursing training.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on nursing students at the University of Abuja College of Nursing. Limitations include variability in students’ access to research materials and faculty expertise in EBP training.

Definitions of Terms

  • Evidence-Based Practice (EBP): The integration of research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences in nursing care.
  • Clinical Decision-Making: The process of making patient care decisions based on evidence and professional judgment.
  • Research Appraisal: The evaluation of research studies to determine their relevance and validity in practice.
