Practical demonstrations are widely regarded as an essential component in the education and training of nursing students, particularly in enhancing their clinical skills. Clinical competence is vital for nursing professionals, as it directly impacts patient care, safety, and the overall quality of healthcare delivery (Ali & Imran, 2023). The role of practical demonstrations, which provide hands-on experience in real-world settings, is central to the development of clinical expertise and confidence in students (Javed et al., 2024). In nursing education, theoretical knowledge alone is insufficient; practical demonstrations help bridge the gap between theoretical learning and actual clinical practice (Brown & Green, 2023). These practical sessions enable students to apply the knowledge gained in classrooms to real-life scenarios, improving their diagnostic skills, patient interaction, and emergency response capabilities.
Ogun State College of Nursing and Midwifery plays a significant role in educating future nurses and midwives in Nigeria. The college incorporates various instructional strategies, including practical demonstrations, to ensure that students develop adequate clinical competencies. However, it remains unclear how effective these demonstrations are in improving students' clinical skills within the context of this institution. This research aims to examine how practical demonstrations contribute to the clinical skills development of nursing students at Ogun State College of Nursing and Midwifery. Understanding the effectiveness of these demonstrations can provide insight into whether current teaching strategies adequately prepare students for clinical practice or if enhancements are necessary (Nguyen et al., 2024).
Several studies have indicated that practical demonstrations significantly improve nursing students’ clinical performance and patient care delivery. For instance, a study by Lin et al. (2023) highlights that nursing students who received consistent hands-on training exhibited greater proficiency in clinical tasks such as administering injections, patient assessments, and monitoring vital signs. Despite these benefits, challenges such as inadequate clinical placements, overcrowded teaching settings, and lack of sufficient resources can limit the effectiveness of practical demonstrations (Gupta et al., 2024). The current research intends to identify these barriers and explore how they influence the overall clinical skill development of nursing students at Ogun State College of Nursing and Midwifery.
Nursing education requires an equilibrium between theoretical knowledge and clinical skills, and practical demonstrations are considered key to achieving this balance. However, despite the acknowledged importance of these demonstrations, there is limited research on how they specifically impact clinical skills development within the context of Ogun State College of Nursing and Midwifery. While the college utilizes practical sessions, it is uncertain whether these demonstrations effectively translate to improved clinical competencies in students. The absence of structured evaluation or feedback mechanisms makes it challenging to assess the true impact of these demonstrations on students’ ability to perform critical nursing procedures in real-world healthcare settings.
Furthermore, existing studies suggest that several factors can influence the success of practical demonstrations, including faculty experience, student engagement, and the availability of clinical resources (Ali & Imran, 2023). At Ogun State College of Nursing and Midwifery, there is a growing concern that practical demonstrations may not be optimally conducted or may lack the necessary support to enable effective learning. There is also a need to assess the level of student satisfaction with the practical sessions, as students may have different perceptions regarding their importance or effectiveness in enhancing clinical competence.
The problem, therefore, lies in the inadequacy of empirical evidence that can explain how practical demonstrations affect students' clinical skills development, specifically in the context of the Ogun State College of Nursing and Midwifery. This study seeks to address this gap by critically assessing the effectiveness of practical demonstrations and exploring the factors that may limit their impact on students' clinical performance.
The study will focus on nursing students at Ogun State College of Nursing and Midwifery, examining their experiences and perceptions regarding practical demonstrations. The research will be limited to students currently enrolled in the clinical years of the nursing program. A limitation of the study includes the potential for response bias, as students may overestimate the effectiveness of practical demonstrations or provide socially desirable answers. Additionally, the availability of resources and time constraints may restrict the scope of data collection, potentially limiting the comprehensiveness of the study.
