Background of the Study:
Cultural practices play a central role in the lives of many communities in Nigeria, including those in Katsina-Ala, Benue State. While cultural traditions often provide a sense of identity and belonging, some practices have been identified as detrimental to the protection and promotion of human rights. In Katsina-Ala, certain practices such as forced marriages, gender-based discrimination, and harmful traditional rites may conflict with modern human rights principles, particularly those relating to gender equality, individual freedom, and the right to life and dignity.

This study seeks to explore how these cultural practices in Katsina-Ala affect the protection of human rights within the community. Understanding the relationship between culture and human rights is essential for creating policies and programs that preserve cultural heritage while ensuring the protection of fundamental rights for all individuals.

Statement of the Problem:
Despite the existence of human rights laws in Nigeria, certain cultural practices in Katsina-Ala undermine the full realization of these rights, particularly for women, children, and marginalized groups. The persistence of harmful cultural norms that promote inequality and infringe on individual freedoms complicates the effort to protect human rights in the region. This study aims to evaluate the impact of such cultural practices on the protection of human rights in Katsina-Ala.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of cultural practices on the protection of human rights in Katsina-Ala.

  2. To identify specific cultural practices that pose challenges to human rights protection in the region.

  3. To recommend strategies for harmonizing cultural practices with human rights principles in Katsina-Ala.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the cultural practices in Katsina-Ala that impact human rights protection?

  2. How do these cultural practices affect the rights of women, children, and marginalized groups in Katsina-Ala?

  3. What measures can be taken to ensure that cultural practices do not violate human rights in Katsina-Ala?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Harmful cultural practices in Katsina-Ala negatively affect the protection of human rights, particularly for women and children.

  2. The majority of cultural practices in Katsina-Ala are not aligned with international human rights standards.

  3. Interventions that raise awareness about human rights can lead to a reduction in the harmful effects of certain cultural practices in Katsina-Ala.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study will focus on cultural practices in Katsina-Ala, Benue State, with an emphasis on their impact on human rights. Limitations may include difficulties in accessing communities that are resistant to changing traditional practices and potential biases in community members' perspectives on cultural norms.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Cultural Practices: The customs, traditions, and rituals followed by a community, which can include rites of passage, marriage traditions, and gender roles.

  • Human Rights Protection: The safeguarding of fundamental rights such as freedom from discrimination, the right to education, and the right to life and dignity.

  • Harmful Practices: Cultural or traditional practices that violate or undermine individuals' rights, such as forced marriages, gender-based violence, and child labor.
