Background of the Study

Illegal logging is a significant environmental issue, particularly in areas where forest resources are rich but poorly regulated. In Kuje Local Government Area (LGA), FCT-Abuja, illegal logging activities have led to the depletion of forest cover and a consequent loss of biodiversity (Aliyu & Oloyede, 2023). The extraction of timber for commercial purposes, often without regard for sustainability or local environmental laws, has resulted in habitat destruction, soil erosion, and the decline of plant and animal species. The government and conservation organizations have made efforts to control illegal logging, but enforcement challenges persist. This study aims to examine the effects of illegal logging on biodiversity in Kuje, focusing on its impacts on forest ecosystems, flora and fauna, and the broader environmental health of the area.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Illegal logging in Kuje LGA continues to contribute to biodiversity loss, with consequences for local communities that depend on natural resources for their livelihoods. The persistence of illegal activities in forest areas, coupled with inadequate enforcement of environmental laws, undermines conservation efforts. This study will explore the extent of biodiversity loss resulting from illegal logging in Kuje and offer recommendations for improving forest management and conservation practices.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

• To assess the impact of illegal logging on biodiversity in Kuje Local Government Area.

• To evaluate the effectiveness of existing policies and enforcement mechanisms in curbing illegal logging.

• To recommend strategies for reducing the negative impacts of illegal logging on biodiversity in Kuje.

1.4 Research Questions

• What is the impact of illegal logging on biodiversity in Kuje LGA?

• How effective are the current policies and enforcement measures in controlling illegal logging in Kuje?

• What strategies can be adopted to mitigate the effects of illegal logging on biodiversity in Kuje?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

• H1: Illegal logging has led to a significant loss of biodiversity in Kuje Local Government Area.

• H2: Current enforcement measures are insufficient to curb illegal logging activities in Kuje.

• H3: Implementing stricter forest management policies and community-based conservation programs will reduce the impacts of illegal logging in Kuje.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it addresses the environmental challenges posed by illegal logging in Kuje, providing insights into the causes and effects of biodiversity loss. By examining the impacts on forest ecosystems and species conservation, the study will contribute to the development of more effective environmental policies and conservation strategies (Aliyu & Oloyede, 2023). The findings will be valuable for local authorities, environmental NGOs, and policy makers working to protect forest resources in the region.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the effects of illegal logging on biodiversity in Kuje Local Government Area, FCT-Abuja. It will assess the loss of plant and animal species and the broader ecological impacts. Limitations include potential difficulties in accessing accurate data on illegal logging activities and the challenges of measuring biodiversity loss over time.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Illegal Logging: The unlawful extraction of timber or forest resources, often without proper authorization or regard for sustainable forestry practices.

• Biodiversity Loss: The decline in the variety of species and ecosystems, often as a result of habitat destruction, pollution, and over-exploitation of natural resources.

• Forest Management: The process of planning, implementing, and monitoring activities aimed at maintaining or improving the health and sustainability of forest ecosystems.
