Background of the Study:
Domestic violence remains a significant social issue in Nigeria, with women being the primary victims of physical, emotional, and psychological abuse within the home. In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Gwagwalada has witnessed a troubling rise in cases of domestic violence, with many women experiencing abuse but facing barriers in accessing justice (Okechukwu, 2024). Over the years, several laws have been introduced at both national and state levels to protect women from domestic violence. The Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP), passed in 2015, is one of the major legal frameworks designed to safeguard women’s rights and provide remedies for victims of domestic violence.

Despite the legal frameworks, challenges persist in enforcing domestic violence laws, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas such as Gwagwalada. Many women remain unaware of their rights under the law, while legal and societal barriers hinder their ability to seek justice. This study aims to assess the impact of domestic violence laws on women’s rights protection in Gwagwalada, evaluating how these laws have influenced the reporting of cases, access to legal support, and protection from further abuse.

Statement of the Problem:
Although domestic violence laws have been enacted to protect women in Nigeria, their implementation in Gwagwalada, FCT, has faced challenges, including poor enforcement, lack of awareness, and cultural attitudes that tolerate abuse. Many women in Gwagwalada continue to suffer domestic violence without accessing the legal protections afforded to them by law. This study seeks to assess the extent to which domestic violence laws have contributed to the protection of women's rights in Gwagwalada and identify barriers to their effectiveness.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of domestic violence laws on women's rights protection in Gwagwalada, FCT.

  2. To identify the barriers to the effective implementation of domestic violence laws in Gwagwalada.

  3. To propose recommendations for improving the protection of women's rights through enhanced enforcement of domestic violence laws.

Research Questions:

  1. How have domestic violence laws impacted the protection of women’s rights in Gwagwalada?

  2. What are the challenges in implementing domestic violence laws in Gwagwalada, FCT?

  3. How can the enforcement of domestic violence laws be improved in Gwagwalada to better protect women’s rights?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Domestic violence laws have had a positive impact on women’s rights protection in Gwagwalada, though challenges remain in enforcement.

  2. Lack of awareness and cultural biases have hindered the effective implementation of domestic violence laws in Gwagwalada.

  3. Increased community education and stronger law enforcement will improve the protection of women's rights in Gwagwalada.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study will focus on domestic violence laws and their impact on women's rights protection in Gwagwalada, FCT. It will examine the legal, social, and cultural challenges to the effective implementation of these laws. Limitations include potential difficulty in gathering data from survivors due to fear of retribution and social stigma surrounding domestic violence.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Domestic Violence: Any form of physical, emotional, sexual, or psychological abuse that occurs within the home, usually by a partner or family member.

  • Women’s Rights: The rights and freedoms that women are entitled to, including the right to live free from violence and the right to seek legal redress.

  • Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP): A law aimed at eliminating violence against persons, including domestic violence, and providing legal remedies for victims.
