Background of the Study:
Access to clean water is a fundamental human right recognized by the United Nations, as it is essential for survival, health, and well-being. In many parts of Nigeria, including Kachia, Kaduna State, access to clean water remains a significant challenge, particularly in rural areas. The lack of access to clean water often results in the spread of waterborne diseases, malnutrition, and reduced quality of life. In Kachia, residents rely on inadequate and sometimes unsafe water sources, leading to health risks and diminished human rights. According to the World Health Organization (2023), over 60% of Nigeria's rural population lacks access to reliable and clean water sources, which exacerbates socio-economic vulnerabilities.

This study aims to appraise the extent of access to clean water in Kachia, evaluating whether this basic human right is being fulfilled and the implications for public health, education, and overall development. The study will also explore the efforts made by local and state governments, as well as NGOs, to address water scarcity and improve access to clean water in Kachia.

Statement of the Problem:
In Kachia, Kaduna State, many residents still lack reliable access to clean water, which undermines their right to health and sanitation. Water scarcity and contamination are significant issues that affect the local population’s health and quality of life. Despite efforts by the government and NGOs to address these challenges, many communities in Kachia continue to suffer from poor access to safe water. This study seeks to evaluate the extent of the problem, the causes behind it, and the human rights implications for the residents of Kachia.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the availability and quality of clean water sources in Kachia, Kaduna State.

  2. To assess the impact of limited access to clean water on the health and well-being of the residents of Kachia.

  3. To identify strategies and policies that can improve access to clean water in Kachia.

Research Questions:

  1. To what extent do residents of Kachia have access to clean water?

  2. What is the impact of poor access to clean water on the health and well-being of Kachia residents?

  3. What policies and interventions are needed to improve access to clean water in Kachia?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Limited access to clean water significantly impacts the health and well-being of residents in Kachia, Kaduna State.

  2. Government and NGO interventions have had limited success in improving access to clean water in Kachia.

  3. Improved infrastructure and community-based water management strategies can enhance access to clean water in Kachia.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study will focus on the access to clean water in Kachia, Kaduna State, examining the availability, quality, and impact of water sources on public health. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews with local residents, health professionals, and government officials. Limitations may include difficulties in accessing remote areas due to poor infrastructure and limited cooperation from local authorities.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Clean Water: Water that is free from contaminants, safe to drink, and suitable for personal and domestic use.

  • Human Right: A basic right that is inherent to all individuals, including access to safe water, health care, and education.

  • Water Scarcity: The lack of sufficient water resources to meet the demands of a population, often leading to challenges in health, agriculture, and living standards.
