Background of the Study

Infectious diseases continue to pose a significant threat to global health, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria. Diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS remain leading causes of morbidity and mortality, especially in regions like Kaduna State, where access to healthcare is often limited. Early detection, timely intervention, and effective disease surveillance are critical to controlling infectious diseases, yet these remain challenging due to resource constraints, data gaps, and insufficient healthcare infrastructure.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful tool in combating infectious diseases by enhancing diagnostic accuracy, predicting outbreaks, and optimizing treatment protocols. AI-driven systems analyze large datasets to identify trends, detect anomalies, and forecast disease spread, enabling public health authorities to implement timely interventions. In healthcare facilities, AI applications can improve diagnostic accuracy for infectious diseases through machine learning algorithms that process clinical and laboratory data.

Kaduna State General Hospital, like many healthcare facilities in Nigeria, faces significant challenges in managing infectious diseases due to a lack of advanced diagnostic tools and surveillance systems. The integration of AI could transform the hospital’s ability to detect, monitor, and treat infectious diseases more effectively. This study examines the role of AI in combating infectious diseases, with a focus on Kaduna State General Hospital, providing insights into the potential of this technology to strengthen Nigeria’s public health systems.

Statement of the Problem

Infectious diseases remain a major public health challenge in Kaduna State, with limited diagnostic capacity and inefficient surveillance systems exacerbating their impact. AI offers innovative solutions to these challenges, but its adoption in managing infectious diseases in Nigeria is minimal. This study investigates how AI can improve the detection, surveillance, and treatment of infectious diseases at Kaduna State General Hospital, addressing critical gaps in healthcare delivery.

Aim and Objectives of the Study

Aim:
To explore the use of Artificial Intelligence in combating infectious diseases at Kaduna State General Hospital.

Objectives:

  1. To identify the challenges in managing infectious diseases at Kaduna State General Hospital.

  2. To examine the role of AI in improving the detection and monitoring of infectious diseases.

  3. To evaluate the impact of AI-driven interventions on the outcomes of infectious disease management.

Research Questions

  1. What challenges does Kaduna State General Hospital face in managing infectious diseases?

  2. How can AI applications enhance the detection and treatment of infectious diseases?

Research Hypotheses

  1. AI-driven systems improve diagnostic accuracy for infectious diseases.

  2. The integration of AI enhances the hospital’s capacity for disease surveillance and monitoring.

  3. AI technology reduces the prevalence and impact of infectious diseases at Kaduna State General Hospital.

Significance of the Study

This study highlights the transformative potential of AI in managing infectious diseases, focusing on its application in Kaduna State General Hospital. The findings will inform healthcare practitioners and policymakers on leveraging AI to enhance public health outcomes and combat infectious disease epidemics.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The study focuses on AI applications in infectious disease management at Kaduna State General Hospital. Limitations include the availability of data on AI-driven interventions and the study’s specific focus on a single hospital, which may limit generalizability.

Definition of Terms

  1. Artificial Intelligence (AI): The simulation of human intelligence in machines to analyze data and make predictions.

  2. Infectious Diseases: Illnesses caused by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, or parasites, often spread from person to person.

  3. Kaduna State General Hospital: A healthcare facility in Kaduna State providing primary and specialized medical services.
