Background of the Study

Maternal nutrition is critical for the health of both the mother and the developing fetus during pregnancy. Proper nutrition during pregnancy can prevent a range of complications, including low birth weight, preterm birth, and maternal anemia (Nnamdi et al., 2023). Nurses play an essential role in educating pregnant women about proper nutrition, identifying nutritional deficiencies, and ensuring that mothers adhere to recommended dietary practices (Musa et al., 2024). Given that nutrition during pregnancy affects fetal development and maternal health, it is essential to evaluate how well nurses understand the relationship between maternal nutrition and pregnancy outcomes.

In Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, located in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, nurses are actively involved in providing prenatal care to pregnant women. However, there is limited research on how nurses’ knowledge of maternal nutrition influences pregnancy outcomes in this setting. Nurses' ability to provide accurate nutritional advice and support can significantly impact pregnancy outcomes, improving both maternal health and fetal development. This study aims to assess the knowledge of nurses at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital regarding maternal nutrition and its effect on pregnancy outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Inadequate maternal nutrition can lead to adverse pregnancy outcomes, yet there is limited research on the role of nurses in promoting healthy maternal nutrition at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. This study seeks to examine the effect of nurses' knowledge of maternal nutrition on pregnancy outcomes, focusing on their ability to influence and support pregnant women in making appropriate dietary choices.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of knowledge of nurses at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital regarding maternal nutrition.
  2. To evaluate the effect of nurses’ knowledge of maternal nutrition on pregnancy outcomes at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.
  3. To identify the challenges nurses face in promoting maternal nutrition and suggest strategies to enhance their effectiveness.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge of nurses at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital regarding maternal nutrition?
  2. How does nurses’ knowledge of maternal nutrition affect pregnancy outcomes at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in promoting maternal nutrition at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses with higher knowledge of maternal nutrition have a positive influence on pregnancy outcomes compared to those with lower knowledge.
  2. There is a significant relationship between nurses’ knowledge of maternal nutrition and the nutritional practices of pregnant women.
  3. The challenges faced by nurses in promoting maternal nutrition are significantly related to inadequate resources and training.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in the antenatal care unit of Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. It will assess their knowledge of maternal nutrition and the effect of their knowledge on pregnancy outcomes. The study will not include nurses from other departments or healthcare settings.

A limitation of the study is the reliance on self-reported data, which may introduce bias in nurses' assessments of their own knowledge. Additionally, the findings may not be generalizable to other regions or hospitals with different resource settings.

Definitions of Terms
