Background of the Study

Pediatric poisoning remains a significant public health issue, particularly in low-resource settings where children are at risk due to unintentional exposure to toxic substances such as household chemicals, medicines, and pesticides. Poisoning can lead to serious health consequences, including organ damage, neurological impairment, and death. Nurses, particularly those in emergency and pediatric care, are often the first healthcare providers to respond to poisoning cases. Their preparedness in managing pediatric poisoning, including their ability to recognize symptoms, provide initial treatment, and facilitate timely referrals, is crucial to minimizing the adverse outcomes associated with poisoning.

Gombe State Specialist Hospital, located in northeastern Nigeria, serves as a major healthcare facility for children in the region, including cases of pediatric poisoning. However, the preparedness of nurses in handling pediatric poisoning cases at this hospital has not been thoroughly evaluated. This study seeks to assess the preparedness of nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital for managing pediatric poisoning cases, focusing on their knowledge, skills, and the resources available for effective treatment.

Statement of the Problem

Pediatric poisoning is a major concern at Gombe State Specialist Hospital, and the ability of nurses to manage these cases effectively is crucial. However, there may be gaps in nurses' knowledge and preparedness to handle poisoning incidents in children, leading to delays in treatment and potential complications. Factors such as limited training, inadequate resources, and lack of standardized protocols may hinder the ability of nurses to provide optimal care. This study aims to identify these challenges and assess the overall preparedness of nurses in responding to pediatric poisoning cases.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of knowledge and preparedness of nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital for managing pediatric poisoning cases.
  2. To identify the common types of poisoning incidents in pediatric patients at the hospital and evaluate the response protocols in place.
  3. To determine the challenges nurses face in managing pediatric poisoning cases and recommend strategies to improve preparedness.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge and preparedness of nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital in managing pediatric poisoning cases?
  2. What types of pediatric poisoning cases are commonly treated at Gombe State Specialist Hospital, and how are they managed?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in managing pediatric poisoning, and how can their preparedness be improved?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital are adequately prepared to handle pediatric poisoning cases.
  2. There is a significant relationship between nurses' knowledge of pediatric poisoning and their ability to manage poisoning cases effectively.
  3. Barriers such as inadequate training and lack of resources negatively affect nurses' preparedness for handling pediatric poisoning.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in the emergency and pediatric units of Gombe State Specialist Hospital. A limitation of the study includes potential response bias and the inability to generalize findings beyond the hospital, as the study will focus on a single institution.

Definition of Terms

  • Pediatric Poisoning: The ingestion, inhalation, or absorption of toxic substances by children, often leading to health complications.
  • Preparedness: The readiness of nurses to effectively manage pediatric poisoning cases, including their knowledge, skills, and access to resources.
  • Gombe State Specialist Hospital: A healthcare facility in Gombe State, Nigeria, providing specialized care, including emergency and pediatric services.
