Background of the Study
Pediatric poisoning remains a significant public health issue, particularly in low-resource settings where children are at risk due to unintentional exposure to toxic substances such as household chemicals, medicines, and pesticides. Poisoning can lead to serious health consequences, including organ damage, neurological impairment, and death. Nurses, particularly those in emergency and pediatric care, are often the first healthcare providers to respond to poisoning cases. Their preparedness in managing pediatric poisoning, including their ability to recognize symptoms, provide initial treatment, and facilitate timely referrals, is crucial to minimizing the adverse outcomes associated with poisoning.
Gombe State Specialist Hospital, located in northeastern Nigeria, serves as a major healthcare facility for children in the region, including cases of pediatric poisoning. However, the preparedness of nurses in handling pediatric poisoning cases at this hospital has not been thoroughly evaluated. This study seeks to assess the preparedness of nurses at Gombe State Specialist Hospital for managing pediatric poisoning cases, focusing on their knowledge, skills, and the resources available for effective treatment.
Statement of the Problem
Pediatric poisoning is a major concern at Gombe State Specialist Hospital, and the ability of nurses to manage these cases effectively is crucial. However, there may be gaps in nurses' knowledge and preparedness to handle poisoning incidents in children, leading to delays in treatment and potential complications. Factors such as limited training, inadequate resources, and lack of standardized protocols may hinder the ability of nurses to provide optimal care. This study aims to identify these challenges and assess the overall preparedness of nurses in responding to pediatric poisoning cases.
