Background of the Study
Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to infection causes widespread inflammation, leading to organ failure and death (Olumide et al., 2023). Early recognition and timely treatment of sepsis are critical to improving patient outcomes (Alade et al., 2024). Nurses play an essential role in identifying the early signs of sepsis, administering initial treatments, and ensuring adherence to protocols designed to manage the condition effectively (Eze et al., 2023). In University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, the sepsis management protocol provides guidelines for early detection and treatment but challenges may exist in ensuring nurses' adherence to these protocols due to factors such as staffing shortages, resource constraints, or lack of continuous education (Adeyemi et al., 2024). This study examines how well nurses adhere to established sepsis management protocols at University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital and identifies factors influencing their adherence.
Statement of the Problem
Sepsis remains one of the leading causes of mortality in hospitals worldwide, and Nigeria is no exception (Afolabi et al., 2023). Nurses are integral to early sepsis detection and treatment, yet studies suggest that adherence to sepsis management protocols is often inconsistent (Okeke et al., 2023). In University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, adherence to these protocols may be impacted by a range of factors, including insufficient training, lack of resources, and organizational barriers. This study seeks to examine nurses' adherence to sepsis management protocols and the challenges they face in adhering to these guidelines.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in the emergency and intensive care units of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. Limitations include the reliance on self-reported data regarding adherence, which may be subject to bias. Additionally, the study will not explore the perspectives of patients or physicians in sepsis management.
